Lehigh Scores 19 Runs To Defeat Saint Peter's In Eight Innings

3/17/2024 6:36:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh and Saint Peter's took the field one last time on Sunday afternoon to conclude a four-game series. The Mountain Hawks started hot and didn't take their foot off the gas pedal, winning 19-8 in an eight-inning contest.

"It was great to see our offense have back-to-back strong performances," said head coach Sean Leary. "Perich, Butler, Kohl, Young and Noone all had big games."

Teddy Tolliver earned the win on the mound, throwing 5.2 innings while striking out five batters. Saint Peter's starter Logan Wenzel picked up the loss, tossing only 0.1 innings while allowing nine earned runs on four hits.

The Mountain Hawks made a statement to begin the game, scoring nine runs to begin the game. Wenzel walked the first two Lehigh batters before Rafe Perich singled to score the game's first run. After Justin Butler was walked, Andrew Kohl singled through the left side, which scored two more runs to make it 3-0. A Tyler Young 2RBI double, bases loaded hit by pitch, Ryan Cochran sac-fly, another Perich RBI single and a Butler RBI single allowed the Mountain Hawks to race ahead to a massive lead.

No more scoring would take place until the bottom of the fourth inning when a Young RBI single scored Butler to extend Lehigh's lead to ten. The Peacocks showed some life offensively in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on an error and three hits to cut into the Mountain Hawk advantage. However, Lehigh showed off their offensive prowess once again the bottom of the fifth. The Mountain Hawks added four more runs in the frame off of a Perich 2RBI double, a Kohl RBI single and a Raffaele Rogers double that sent Kohl past home plate.

After a Garrett Grego double added two more runs for the Peacocks in the sixth, Jake Whitlinger responded with an RBI double of his own in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored an additional run in the seventh inning, setting the score at 16-7 headed into the eighth. While the Peacocks scored another run off of a Tyler Cotton RBI double, Butler's bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the eighth resulted in the game being called.

Five players finished the game with three or more hits. Perich led the way with a 4-6 split with four RBIs, Butler and Kohl both went 3-5 with four RBIs, Young hit 3-5 with three RBIs while first-year Andrew Noone hit 3-5 on the day.

The Mountain Hawks will head south for a midweek clash with the Penn Quakers on Wednesday, March 20 prior to the start of Patriot League play. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Philadelphia.

"It's definitely a confidence builder for the team to consistently square the ball up," said Leary. "We are looking forward to prepping for the Patriot League portion of the schedule."
