Johnson, Garrido Win Weekly Awards Following Lehigh's #Rivalry160 Triumph

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following Lehigh's Patriot League championship-clinching 38-14 win over Lafayette Saturday in Rivalry 160, a pair of Mountain Hawks picked up Patriot League weekly awards on Monday. Rivalry game MVP Hayden Johnson was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, while junior kicker Nick Garrido picked up his second Special Teams Player of the Week award this season.

A 21-point second quarter helped propel Lehigh to its fifth consecutive win overall, as the Mountain Hawks captured their league-leading 13th Patriot League title and first since 2017.

Johnson earned game MVP honors after passing for 115 yards and a touchdown and adding 25 rushing yards and a score. He completed a very efficient 10-of-13 passes and led Lehigh's offense on five scoring drives. Johnson threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Mason Humphrey to give Lehigh a 21-7 second-quarter lead and then dove into the end zone on a five-yard rush with one second remining in the first half for a touchdown that gave Lehigh a 28-7 halftime advantage.

The Lancaster, Pa., native became the first first-year player to win game MVP honors since Lafayette's Drew Reed in 2013 and the first Lehigh player to accomplish the feat since Phil Stambaugh in 1996.

For the season, Johnson is completing 69 percent of his passes for 1030 yards with eight touchdowns compared to five interceptions. He has also rushed for 228 yards and four scores.

Garrido had another strong day kicking the football in Rivalry 160 with eight points, going 5-for-5 on extra points and adding a 31-yard field goal.

The Leopards opened the second half with a touchdown drive that cut Lehigh's lead to 28-14, but Lehigh answered with an impressive 12-play, 54-yard drive that milked 8:10 off the third-quarter clock. Garrido capped the drive with his field goal to give Lehigh a 17-point lead with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.

Garrido has kicked at least one field goal in six consecutive games and is 19-for-19 on extra points during Lehigh's current five-game winning streak.

Also on Monday, sophomore safety Mason Moore earned honorable mention recognition. Moore made six tackles Saturday and delivered the exclamation point in Lehigh's Rivalry win with a 41-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. It was Moore's second interception of the season and Lehigh's third interception return touchdown.

The Mountain Hawks will face No. 9 seed Richmond Saturday in the first round of the FCS playoffs with game time set for 2 p.m. from Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va.
