Lehigh Uses Second Half Surge to Edge Colgate 2-1

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Lehigh men's soccer used a strong second half to come out with the 2-1 victory over Colgate Wednesday night in Hamilton.Â
The Mountain Hawks improved to 2-5-2 (1-2 PL), and the Raiders dropped to 3-6 (1-2 PL). Â
"Any time you get your first Patriot League win and pick up three points on the road at Colgate, which is one of the tougher places to play in the league because they're really well-coached by Erik Ronning, gives us a boost of confidence," said head coach Dean Koski.
Colgate struck first as Aidan Davock found the back of the net in the 34th minute after Tommy Chyzowych saved a Colgate shot but was unable to grab the rebound.
Chyzowych, who was making his first start since the 2022 season, finished with one save. Colgate's Andre Cooke also tallied one save
"It has been a next-man up mentality for us this year, and to everybody's credit, when we've asked them to step up, they have," Koski said. "Tommy did a really good job at managing the game and calming things down and doing what he needed to do to get us a win. The team played with confidence in front of him defensively, and he played with confidence behind them. We're lucky to have four really good goalkeepers within our program."
The Raiders went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Despite a slow start from Lehigh with only two first-half shots, the Mountain Hawks found their momentum in the second half.Â
"We were pretty direct and hard on them at halftime, more so from an execution and tension and overall attitude standpoint to want to win moments," Koski said. "I felt like we've played on our back foot for a lot of games, and part of that is we're really young, and a lot of guys are getting their first minutes, and injuries play a role in that. To their credit, they responded really well. We put Tommy Zipprich in for Thomas Robertson, and Zipprich had a really good game. Beckett had a much better second half and inspired us - he was a handful."
In the 51st minute, the Mountain Hawks were awarded a penalty kick since Connor Cates fouled a Lehigh player in the box. Perry Kingson stepped up to take it, and Kingson converted the penalty kick. Kingson is now 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season.
Beckett Wenger found an open Jax Adkins in the 79th minute on the left side of the net, and Adkins tapped it in to give Lehigh the 2-1 edge over the Raiders. Wednesday's game also marked the first collegiate action for Adkins.Â
"I'm really happy for Jax," Koski said. "We've had to go to the bench to give other guys an opportunity, and I'm happy for them because they have been working hard and their attitudes in practice have been good."
The Mountain Hawks defense was relentless down the stretch, allowing limited chances.
Lehigh outshot Colgate 11-9. The Mountain Hawks and Raiders were both rewarded four corner kicks each.Â
Kingson tallied a game-high of four shots.
The Mountain Hawks will take on Navy in Annapolis Saturday at 12 p.m.
