Gueye's Brace Saves Result In 2-2 Draw Vs. Old Dominion

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The non-league schedule for Lehigh men's soccer continued Tuesday evening from the Ulrich Sports Complex as the Mountain Hawks hosted the Old Dominion Monarchs. A brace from senior Yusef Gueye secured a 2-2 draw for the Mountain Hawks and kept them without a loss on the season.
"I'm really pleased with the team's resilience and grit when we needed to get level with [ODU]," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "They kept competing to the end, so I'm certainly happy about that."
Lehigh (2-0-2) faced a deficit early, as Old Dominion (1-1-2) struck first in the ninth minute of the foot of Evan Watt. The Mountain Hawks found an equalizer 18 minutes later as Gueye netted his first goal of the season, heading the ball in off a Giacomo Zizza corner. The two teams entered the locker room tied 1-1.
ODU ramped up the pressure in the second half, out-shooting Lehigh 7-2 in the frame. The Monarch attack came through in the 61st minute when Alex Kryazhev broke the tie to give ODU a 2-1 lead. With time running out, it seemed that the Mountain Hawks were headed towards suffering their first loss of the season. However, Jason Pynadath's shot was deflected into the back of the net by Gueye in the 89th minute to escape defeat and keep a zero in the loss column for the Mountain Hawks.
Gueye led the way with two shots on goal, both of which he scored on. Defender Paul Smajlaj recorded two shots and one shot on goal, Zizza took two shots and Jax Adkins tallied a shot on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen made four saves on the night.
"Yusef is coming into his own," said Koski. "We can see the maturity in him out on the field. He's leading more, talking more, organizing and doing the things he's really good at which is trying to get in behind, getting good crosses in and putting the ball in the frame when he shoots."
The Mountain Hawks return to play on Saturday, September 6 to take on the defending national champion #9 Vermont Catamounts before Patriot League play kicks the following weekend.
"We are playing the best team in the country… it's a good challenge for us," said Koski. "Certainly, we hope it prepares us for Patriot League play, but we aren't going up there just to showcase, we have to try to compete and see what we can do. I'm looking forward to seeing how we match up against them."
