Lehigh Bested 3-1 On The Road By #9 Vermont

9/6/2025 8:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Lehigh soccer traveled up north on Saturday for a date with the defending national champion No. 9 Vermont Catamounts. Three first half goals from the Catamounts propelled them to a 3-1 victory, handing the Mountain Hawks their first loss of the season.

"Anytime you go on the road and play against the defending national champs, it's always an uphill climb," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "I really liked the way we regrouped in the second half. We got a goal back that gave us some energy and life, and I thought we competed the way that I hoped we would have competed in the first half."

The scoring started early for Vermont (3-0-2) when their leading goal scorer Maximilian Kissel scored in the tenth minute on assists from Marcell Papp and Ryan Zellefrow. UVM's David Ismael extended his team's lead on an unassisted goal in the 39th minute. The Catamounts then tacked on one more in the 43rd minute off the foot of TJ Liquori to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.

Lehigh (2-1-2) scored the lone goal of the second half in the 63rd minute from first-year Luciano Larrea by way of a Landon Bealer assist. The first-year has now scored two goals on the season.

"When we recruited Luciano, we knew that he had some special talents," said Koski. "He has always been one of those players that found ways to score goals in club soccer and at the highest levels of club soccer. He finds his way around the goal and has a knack for scoring, and he's shown that early and we certainly hope he continues that."

Lehigh outshot Vermont 20-15 in the match, including a 14-6 advantage in the second half. Larrea, sophomore Giacomo Zizza and junior Trey Sheeler provided Lehigh's shots on goal.

"We definitely put some pressure on them and created some chances," said Koski. "We were on the front foot for a lot of the second half, and that is important playing one of the best teams in the country on the road."

Sophomore goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen made six saves on the night.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 13 to open Patriot League play against the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds. The game is slated for 1 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem.
