Lehigh Suffers 1-0 Loss At Marist

9/16/2025 9:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After opening Patriot League play 1-0 with a win over Loyola on Saturday, Lehigh men's soccer hit the road for a midweek tilt with the Marist Red Foxes. The Mountain Hawks suffered only their second loss of the season, falling 1-0 to the Red Foxes.

"We played a good team, and I can see why they're finding ways to get results and win," said head coach Dean Koski. "I thought, for the better part of the game, we matched them well. We made one mistake, and that mistake cost us a goal, but I still appreciated our fight to try and get that goal to the last second."

The first half started rather slowly for Lehigh (3-2-2), as their first shot of the match came in the 21st minute off the boot of Jason Pynadath. The Mountain Hawks picked it up later in the half, sending three shots towards the goal all within the span of a minute. Marist (4-0-2) recorded three shots in the first half, all of which were off target. The two teams entered the half tied 0-0.

The Mountain Hawks generated a chance early in the second half by way of an Aiden Gonzalez shot on goal in the 52nd minute. Shortly after, Marist got on the board when Adriano Iannello found the back of the net on an assist from Arion Ulaj. Lehigh generated several chances in the second half, including four shots on goal, but the Red Foxes managed to hold on.

"We had enough chances to find the back of the net," said Koski. "Their goalkeeper made some good saves; we probably didn't hit as well as we could've. Marist did a good job defensively in one-on-one situations, and I think our flank players have to be a little less predictable and more creative, and we'll work on that with them."

Lehigh took 11 total shots with five of them coming on goal. Marist managed nine total with three on goal. Landon Bealer provided two of Lehigh's shots on goal while Beckett Wenger, Yusef Gueye and Gonzalez accounted for the others. In addition, the Mountain Hawks were called for offsides six times in the match.

"One of our weaknesses last year was that we were too conservative in running without the ball," said Koski. "Offside calls to me mean we're searching for that space and it's a timing piece more than anything. I'm okay with that, the offsides are the least of my concern."

Sophomore goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen made two saves while Marist's Jamie Lowell recorded five saves on the night.

Lehigh continues the Patriot League portion of its schedule on Saturday, September 20 on the road against the Army West Point Black Knights.
