Mountain Hawks Ready for Mid-Week Non-League Game at Coppin State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball program (13-20, 1-10 Patriot League) heads to Baltimore on Wednesday to take on Coppin State (11-20, 4-8 NEC) for the second time this season, this time from Joe Cannon Stadium. The game is slated for 3 p.m.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 1-3 week, earning a 12-9 victory over Delaware State in the consolation game of the Liberty Bell Classic and then was swept by Army West Point on the road. Fifth-year Casey Rother boasted a .625 batting average in four starts and went 10-for-16 with three home runs and two doubles with six RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore Justin Butler produced five hits over the week with a home run with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Lehigh used 13 pitchers last week with seniors Ryan Deom and Will Grisack each making two appearances and throwing a combined 4.1 innings pitched with seven strikeouts. First-year Cole Leaman made his first career start and won his first game wearing the Brown and White. Fifth-year Luke Rettig and sophomore Alex Bouchard each threw six innings against the Black Knights and recorded nine strikeouts between the two starters.
Four Mountain Hawks are hitting over .300, led by Rother, who tops the Mountain Hawks stat sheet with a .354 batting average, 46 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. Junior Tyler Young is hitting .333 while sophomore Andrew Kohl has a .311 batting average and is second on the team with seven home runs. Sophomore Rafe Perich is second on the squad with 42 hits and 27 RBIs and nine doubles while hitting. Patrizi, who has been making his presence in the lineup recently, is hitting .375 and has eight RBIs on 18 hits with eight runs scored and junior Andrew Nole has 26 hits and 13 RBIs with 14 runs scored for a .361 batting average.
Rettig is one of three Mountain Hawk pitchers to have thrown at least 25 innings. Rettig has tossed 34.1 innings this season and has a 4-3 record in eight starts with an ERA of 2.88 and 41 strikeouts this season. He sits second all-time with 248 career strikeouts, now just 15 away from moving into first in program history. Sophomore Alex Bouchard has thrown 30.2 innings, with 29 strikeouts in eight starts and nine appearances while junior Teddy Tolliver has thrown 25 innings with 25 strikeouts in seven starts and eight appearances. First-year Shane O'Neill and senior Will Grisack have both tossed over 21 innings and made over 13 appearances on the mound.
Coppin State (11-20, 4-8 NEC) enters the game on a three-game losing streak after being swept by Maryland Eastern Shore on the road in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles earned a win over Navy this past Wednesday, 7-6, before dropping three straight to the Hawks in NEC action.
Three Eagles are hitting over .300 with Brett Curran leading the squad with a .341 batting average and 31 hits, 16 runs scored, 15 RBIs, four doubles and three triples with a solo home run. Brody Black is hitting .305, with eight doubles, two triples and two home runs with 16 RBIs and a team-high 30 runs scored. Jordan Hamberg finishes out Coppin State with batters hitting above .300, hitting at a clip of .301 with a team-leading 34 hits, eight doubles, three triples, five home runs and 26 RBIs.
Coppin State has three pitchers who have recorded 33 or more innings on the mound, led by Marcos Herrand who has made eight starts for 47.1 innings with an 3-5 record. He has 39 strikeouts on the season with 22 walks and an ERA of 6.46. Liam McCallum has tossed 35 innings with 26 Ks and 20 walks in seven starts for a 1-4 record while Hamberg has hurled 33 innings of action for a team-leading 41 strikeouts in seven starts for a 2-3 record.
Lehigh defeated the Eagles 12-2 at home from J. David Walker Field on March 8. Coppin State got on the board in the top of the first inning before the Mountain Hawks scored 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-1 lead after five innings. The Eagles got one more run across in the eighth to put the game at its final score of 12-2. Lehigh is 25-2 against Coppin State all-time and looks to win its fourth straight game on Wednesday in Baltimore.
The Mountain Hawks will remain on the road when they travel to Worcester, Mass. for a three-game series with Holy Cross in Patriot League action Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two of the twin bill set for 4 p.m. The lone game on Sunday will start at 1 p.m. to conclude the three-game series. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
