Mountain Hawks Earn Non-League Victory over Coppin State

HANOVER, Md. – The Lehigh baseball squad (14-20) defeated Coppin State (11-21) for the second time this season as the Mountain Hawks took down the Eagles 8-2 from Joe Cannon Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless two innings, the Mountain Hawks got on the board first with four runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Andrew Kohl hit a solo home run to left field to take a 1-0 lead before sophomore Rafe Perich doubled to right-center field to clear the bases for three RBIs, giving Lehigh a 4-0 advantage.
Two innings later, fifth-year Casey Rother plated sophomore Jake Whitlinger with a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Mountain Hawks lead to 5-0 after five frames of action.
Coppin State managed to get their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Liam McCallum earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field to put the game at 5-1. The Eagles got their second run when Anthony Divittorio doubled to right field to cut the deficit to three runs, 5-2 after eight innings.
Lehigh added three more runs of insurance in the top half of the ninth, starting when first-year Dom Patrizi recorded an RBI single to right to score fifth-year Austin Dambach. Whitlinger finished off the scoring with a two-run home run to right field and ensured the 8-2 Mountain Hawks' victory over Coppin State.
Seven different Mountain Hawks contributed to the eight total hits in the non-league game, led by Patrizi going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Perich's lone hit plated three RBIs with his double while Kohl crushed his eighth home run of the season and Whitlinger connected on his second homer of the year for two RBIs. Whitlinger, along with Patrizi and Dambach each stole a base during the game as well.
Coppin State had five hits on the afternoon, all by different Eagles. Four pitchers threw for CSU with Christian Pareja (L, 1-2) getting the start. He gave up five runs, four of them earned, on four hits with three strikeouts, three walks and hit two batters in five innings of work while Giiovanni Canales was the first in relief. Canales tossed two scoreless frames without allowing a hit with a walk and a strikeout and was replaced by Tim Ruffino who tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout. John Neeld finished out the game by allowing three runs on four hits and striking out one.
Lehigh also through four pitchers on Wednesday as sophomore Val Taddei made his second start of the season. Taddei delivered four scoreless innings with five strikeouts and two walks and did not allow a hit. Classmate Najir Glenn (W, 1-1) entered in relief and tossed 2.1 innings of work with one run on four hits with one K before first-year Cole Leaman came out of the bullpen and threw 1.1 innings, he allowed one run and hit with three Ks. Senior Will Grisack was the last Mountain Hawk to toe the rubber and struck out two Eagles and held them scoreless and without a hit.
The Mountain Hawks will remain on the road when they travel to Worcester, Mass. for a three-game series with Holy Cross in Patriot League action Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two of the twin bill set for 4 p.m. The lone game on Sunday will start at 1 p.m. to conclude the three-game series. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
