Mountain Hawks Head To Holy Cross For Three-Game Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -Â The fourth weekend of Patriot League play as the Mountain Hawks headed to Worcester, Mass., for a three-game series against Holy Cross. A doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Saturday and the series finale will be at 1 p.m. Sunday from Fitton Field. Saturday's first game and Sunday's series finale are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.

Lehigh is coming off an 8-2 midweek victory at Coppin State, which moved the Mountain Hawks to 14-20 on the season. It was a big day for the sophomore class at the plate with Andrew Kohl and Jake Whitlinger hitting home runs and Rafe Perich driving in three with a fourth-inning bases-clearing double. First-year Dom Patrizi added two hits and a couple of runs scored.

Sophomore Val Taddei delivered a strong start with four scoreless, hitless innings on the mound. He struck out five and walked two. Classmate Najir Glenn added 2.1 innings of one-run relief.

The Mountain Hawks are looking to bounce back as they approach the second half of the Patriot League slate. At 1-10, Lehigh is two games behind fifth-place Holy Cross and is three games behind fourth place Bucknell in the loss column.

Fifth-year Casey Rother leads the Mountain Hawks at the plate, with a .346 batting average, 10 home runs and 42 RBIs. Rother enters the weekend with 27 career home runs, one behind the school record held by Jesse Novalis '04.

On the mound, fifth-year Luke Rettig, sophomore Alex Bouchard and junior Teddy Tolliver started the three games last weekend at Army West Point. Rettig owns a 4-3 record and a 2.88 ERA. He has struck out 41 in 34.1 innings of work and needs 15 strikeouts to surpass Mitch Smith '79 as the program's career leader.

Holy Cross enters this weekend's series at 11-24 overall and 3-8 in the league. The Crusaders beat Stonehill and lost to Rhode Island in midweek action. Last weekend, Holy Cross dropped all three games at Navy. Holy Cross owns a league win over Army West Point and two over Bucknell.

Jake McElroy leads Holy Cross with a .306 batting average. Sean Scanlon and Jack Toomey have provided the power, combining for 24 doubles, seven home runs and 49 RBIs.

Among pitchers with at least 20 innings thrown, Ben Talbot leads Holy Cross with a 4.35 ERA. Scanlon has made 10 starts on the mound and Luke Fox has started seven games for the Crusaders.

Holy Cross leads the all-time series 69-61. Last year Lehigh won the season series 3-2. The Mountain Hawks won two out of three games at J. David Walker Field and then split a doubleheader at Fitton Field on the final day of the regular season.

A stretch of seven consecutive games against Patriot League opponents will continue next week, with Lehigh traveling to Lafayette on Wednesday for a single game at 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will then host Bucknell for three games at J. David Walker Field next weekend.
