Mountain Hawks Fall to the Wolverines to Split Series with Utah Valley

The Wolverines scored a run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 and added another run in the third as Utah Valley was ahead 2-0 after three innings. After a scoreless fourth frame, Lehigh tied the game up at 2-2 in the fifth with a two-RBI double to left-center field from fifth-year Casey Rother, but the Wolverines scored three times in the bottom half of the fifth and added two more in the sixth to extend Utah Valley's advantage to 7-2 through six innings.

The Mountain Hawks recorded four runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to just one run, 7-6. Sophomore Rafe Perich singled up the middle to score one, followed by Rother plating his third RBI of the afternoon with a single to center. Perich then scored on a wild pitch and Rother crossed the plate after junior Tyler Young singled home a run.
Utah Valley countered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and tacked on three more in the eighth to its lead to 13-6. Sophomore Andrew Kohl crushed a three-run home run to left field in the top of the ninth, but the Wolverines would hold on for a 13-9 victory split the series.
Seven Mountain Hawks totaled 13 hits with four players recording at least two hits. Rother and Young both went 3-for-5 on the day with Rother driving in three runs and scoring twice with a double while Young drove in one runner. Fifth-year Gerard Sweeney and junior Jake Whitlinger both went 2-for-5 and scored one run each with Sweeney stealing one base. Kohl crushed his team-leading seventh home run of the season for three RBIs, scored once and swiped a stolen base. Perich had a base hit with an RBI and scored two runs while junior Andrew Nole also had a base knock with two runs scored.

Sophomore right-hander Alex Bouchard was tabbed as the starter and tossed three innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out one batter. Right-handed classmate Val Taddei (L, 0-1) was the first out of the bullpen and threw 1.2 innings with three runs, one earned, one hit and three walks with a couple of strikeouts. Junior right-hander Tyler Thompson and senior right-hander Will Grisack combined for an inning of work. Thompson had one hit and a strikeout while Grisack allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Perich stepped on the mound for 0.1 of an inning and had three runs scored, two of them earned, on one hit and a walk when he was replaced by the right-handed first-year Shane O'Neill who threw one inning and gave up just one hit. Sophomore Jack Hamilton and junior Lucas Rich threw a combined one inning with Hamilton giving up three earned runs on three hits and a walk and Rich walking one.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday, March 14 with a home game against Fairleigh Dickinson at J. David Walker Field and Legacy Park. First-pitch is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
