Eight members of the Lehigh wrestling program competed at the 58th Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 at NOW Arena near Chicago. Three Mountain Hawks earned podium finishes with first-year Ryan Crookham (133) and sophomore Max Brignola (149) finishing in sixth place and junior Sheldon Seymour (125) claiming seventh place. All eight entrants won at least one bout at the two-day event. The Mountain Hawks have had 26 place winners over their five tournaments, with six Lehigh grapplers earning open tournament titles. Lehigh enjoyed another strong season on the mats, but the Mountain Hawks were equally impressive in the classroom in 2021-22. Six wrestlers earned EIWA Academic Achievement Awards, while four were recognized on the NWCA All-Academic Team. Returnees Josh Humphreys, Jake Logan and Brian Meyer joined 2022 graduate Jordan Wood in earning NWCA Honors. AJ Burkhart and Sheldon Seymour joined that group in being honored by the EIWA. Eighteen Mountain Hawks earned GPAs of 3.2 or better during the fall 2022 semester, led by Humphreys, who earned a 4.0 in management. First-year Ryan Crookham owns a 3.92 in Lehigh's college of business and economics. Among projected starters, Humphreys owns a 3.56 cumulative GPA, while sophomore Jake Logan holds a 3.55 in finance. Graduate students Jaret Lane (3.96) and Tate Samuelson (3.75) are doing well in technical entrepreneurship.

Lehigh has a wrestler ranked in five out of 10 weight classes in the latest rankings from InterMat and WrestleStat. Four Mountain Hawks are ranked by FloWrestling (plus four honorable mentions) and Amateur Wrestling News. A 7-1 start has moved sophomore Connor McGonagle into the top 10 in three of the four polls. Senior Josh Humphreys (157) and sophomore Michael Beard (197) appear in the top seven in all four polls, with both Humphreys (AWN) and Beard (WrestleStat) ranked as high as No. 2. Graduate student Tate Samuelson is the fourth Mountain Hawk to appear in all four polls. InterMat and WrestleStat both rank wrestlers from 1-33, FloWrestling ranks 1-24 plus honorable mentions and AWN ranks 1-20.

A pair of top 10 wins last week vaulted Cornell into the top 10 of the NWCA rankings at No. 6. The Big Red defeated Arizona State and Virginia Tech last weekend to move to 4-2 on the dual season. Cornell has nine wrestlers in the latest InterMat rankings, led by three-time NCAA champion Yianni Diakomihalis, who holds the No. 1 spot at 149. Vito Arujau (133) and Chris Foca (174) are also ranked in the top five of their respective weight classes. Mike Grey is in his second season as head coach at his alma mater.

Cornell serves as Lehigh's oldest dual opponent as the Brown and White wrestled its first ever dual against the Big Red in 1910. In terms of number of duals, Cornell ranks third behind Penn State and Navy for Lehigh, with Saturday's dual set to be No. 100 in the series. Lehigh leads 63-33-3 and has won three straight in the series. Cornell has won six of the last 10 duals.

Binghamton carries a 2-7 dual record into this weekend's action. The Bearcats will visit Drexel on Friday before returning home to host Lehigh on Sunday. Binghamton is coming off a southern swing that included a seventh-place finish at the Southern Scuffle and dual losses at NC State and Appalachian State. Three Bearcats appear in the latest InterMat rankings, at the highest three weight classes. All-American Lou DePrez is ranked ninth at 197, while Jacob Nolan (184) and Cory Day (285) also appear in the top 33. Kyle Borshoff is in his sixth season as Binghamton's head coach.

Lehigh has won all six previous meetings with Binghamton, most recently a 24-14 triumph at Grace Hall last January. The first two duals in the series came at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Troy, N.Y. Pat Santoro owns five of Lehigh's six wins versus Binghamton.

Saturday's Lehigh-Cornell match begins at 6:30 p.m. from the Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, N.Y., while Sunday's dual at Binghamton is set for a 1 p.m. start from Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. Both duals will be broadcast on ESPN+. There will be no Lehigh radio coverage of this weekend's matches.

Two more road EIWA duals await the Mountain Hawks next weekend. Lehigh heads to the Palestra in Philadelphia to face Penn, Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. and the Mountain Hawks will then head to Annapolis, Md., the following night to face Navy. The Mountain Hawks will close out a five-dual road swing at Columbia on Jan. 27 before returning home to host Arizona State Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
