Lehigh Rowing Set for Busy Weekend, Highlighted by MARC Championships

4/29/2022 10:38:00 AM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh rowing returns to the water this weekend, with the women facing Bucknell, Duquesne and Delaware Saturday on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa. and the men taking part in the MARC (Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference) Championships on Sunday in Occoquan, Va. Conference championships have arrived for the men while for the women, Saturday marks their final tune-up before the May 13 Patriot League Championships.

"This is our last real test of where we are before going to Patriots," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It is also a really tough week of training on the team, so we build that little bit extra of toughness that we'll need when racing the third 500 meters of the race. The third 500 meters is where races are won and lost at the collegiate level, so it's important to have that gear and desire to push hard in that part of the race."

Racing on Saturday begins at 4 p.m.

The Mountain Hawk women have gotten better and better as the season has progressed, with the Varsity Eight earning Patriot League Boat of the Week for its performance two weekends ago, then honorable mention on the league's weekly honor roll this week. That recognition came after the V8 beat Fairfield and La Salle in the morning, then had a very solid showing against a strong UMass squad in the afternoon (with a margin of just over five seconds).

"We have been really focused on staying long through the water with the oars this week," said Conley. "We worked a lot in previous weeks on getting the oars in together and very distinctly. Now was time to focus on the other end of the stroke to find a few more inches of speed per stroke."

Goals and aspirations remain high heading into Saturday.

"Obviously, we want to walk away from the racing with some wins under our belt, but most importantly, I am hoping the team gets some confidence in their ability to put together their best races consistently," said Conley.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the men will be in Virginia for the MARC Championships, which begins at 9 a.m. with heats.

"The men have found some good speed in the Eight and I am excited to see them put all of their hard work together on the day they have trained for all year," said Conley.

Last Saturday, the Men's Varsity Eight beat Fairfield head-to-head (finishing in 6:03.3 compared to the Stags' 6:14.7). Confidence is high entering the biggest weekend of the year.

"The Varsity Eight is looking to win their event," said Conley. "Bucknell is definitely one of the teams to beat as they have definitely shown some good speed this spring. I think we have definitely gotten faster as the spring has progressed."
