Men's Eight Wins Gold And Women's Four Wins Silver At Head Of The Housatonic

SHELTON, Conn. – After the team's parents weekend scrimmage on September 27, Lehigh men's and women's rowing competed in their first official competition of the fall on Saturday at the Head of the Housatonic. The Mountain Hawks claimed first in the men's Director's Cup 8+ and the women's 4+ earned silver in a successful day on the water.

"Exciting to see our Charles lineups come away with medals in the men's eight and women's four," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee head rowing coach Peter Costas. "We've benefited tremendously from positive internal competition. Outstanding performance from the full squad showing up to race. This is a promising first step."

The first race of the day for the Mountain Hawks was the men's 8+ Director's Cup that saw two Lehigh boats racing. The first boat coxswained by Aidan Judge emerged victorious, finishing in first place with a time of 13:28.140. Lehigh's second boat in the race finished in 14th with a time of 14:27.249.

"Today's result was a great way to start off the fall racing season," said junior Colby Brogan. "We faced off against some strong crews but we leaned against the wall and dug deep. After two weekends of success, we're looking to keep the momentum going at the Head of The Charles."

"So proud of our first-years for putting out a champion effort on their first race with the team," said junior Adelaide Weir. "Our 4 found a new press during that race that'll continue to push us through the fall season."

Next up was 8+ Women's Cup, which had two Lehigh boats competing. The Mountain Hawks finished in sixth and seventh with times of 15:36.530 and 16:00.006 respectively.

Three Lehigh boats raced in the men's open 4+, claiming 12th, 13th, and 15th place finishes with times of 15:53.071, 16:01.338 and 16:39.647. The Mountain Hawks also raced three boats in the women's open 4+ race. The Lehigh boat coxswained by Ava Albano earned a second-place finish with a time of 16:42.038. Lehigh's two other boats finished in fourth (17:01.055) and eighth (17:54.829).

Lehigh concluded the day with two races featuring two-person boats. In the men's race, Lehigh finished in sixth (16:41.667) and eighth (17:43.638) while also having a boat not finish. The women finished in first (18:50.231) and second (20:10.035) in a three boat race.

"My first race with Lehigh was an awesome experience," said first-year Sadie Panaro. "We felt connected and powerful, and I can't wait to see how much faster we can get together this season."

The Mountain Hawks will next be in action at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on October 18-19 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"We had a great first race of the season against some big competition, I feel like we are moving in a great direction and I can't wait to see what our boats can do next time," said senior Madison Goldstein.
