Mountain Hawks Return to Action at Boston University Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following its first Patriot League win of the season two weekends ago and a postponement last weekend, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team returns to the field on Saturday at Boston University. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a hard-fought 16-11 victory over Bucknell in a game that saw them outscore the Bison 9-3 in the second half. Last weekend's game vs. American was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Eagles' program.

On Apr. 2, Bucknell jumped out to early leads of 4-2, 5-3 and later 8-5, but the Mountain Hawks came back with a vengeance. A four-goal second-half run turned a 9-8 deficit into a 12-9 lead. Junior Gabby Schneider led the offense with five goals and seven points. Senior Nora Giordano and sophomore Olivia Memeger each had three goals and one assist (marking Giordano's second-career hat trick). Junior Emma Eberhardt posted two goals and an assist, while sophomore Casey O'Connor scored twice to tie a career high (her two other career goals were also scored in the same game, vs. Loyola).

Junior Katia Carnevale posted a goal and career-high three assists, in the process, eclipsing 100 career points. She became the third Mountain Hawk (all in the junior class) to reach that plateau this season. Schneider reached 100 vs. La Salle while Eberhardt reached 100 the game prior at Army West Point.

Defensively, sophomore Hayley Hunt made 12 saves (11 over the final three quarters). She's up to third in the nation in save percentage (53.1), fourth in saves per game (12.27) and fifth in saves (135). Senior Emma McGillis added two caused turnovers against Bucknell.

Heading into Saturday, Lehigh is in seventh place in the Patriot League standings, but only a half game behind Holy Cross for sixth. The Mountain Hawks have already played the top three teams in the standings (who are a combined 14-1 in the league) with more than half their league games still remaining. Lehigh will now play its final five Patriot League games in 13 days (beginning Saturday) with three of them at home.

Boston University stands 1-12 on the season, 0-6 in Patriot League play. The Terriers' win came two games ago at Merrimack on Apr. 6 via a 17-15 final. Last time out, BU dropped a 16-6 final at Navy. Lauren Kaye leads the team in points (27) and assists (10). Mary Spaeth owns a team-leading 24 goals, to go with two assists for 26 points. Jennifer Barry also has 20 points via 12 goals and eight assists, while posting a Patriot League high 127 groundballs; her 9.77 per game are fourth in the nation. Claire Gola leads BU in caused turnovers with 15. Three goalkeepers have seen time, with Reilly Agres seeing the most - posting a 16.63 goals against average and 37.1 save percentage in 483:31.

Boston University leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 5-4. The teams have split the eight all-time meetings since the Terriers joined the Patriot League for the 2014 season. BU won the first-ever meeting in 1999 by a 17-9 final. Lehigh won the first meeting as league foes, 12-11 on Apr. 5, 2014. The Terriers won the next three before Boston University came back with three straight (from 2016-18). BU has won the two meetings in the Patriot League Tournament, as the teams played in 2014 and 2015. The teams last played on Mar. 16, 2019 and last played in Boston on Mar. 17, 2018.

Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home to host Lafayette next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in The Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
