Learner Wins Flight To Lead Mountain Hawks at SJU Invitational

MERION STATION, Pa. – Junior Jeremy Learner won the No. 4 singles flight to lead the way for the Lehigh men's tennis team at the Saint Joseph's Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday. Learner went 5-0 to win his singles bracket as the Mountain Hawks competed for the third consecutive fall weekend.
 
Learner posted straight set victories over players from Jefferson, Mary Washington and then two players from Villanova to reach the finals, where he defeated Ryan Nguyen of Villanova 10-7 in a third set super tiebreak after splitting the first two sets. Final score was 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-7.
 
Learner also went 1-1 with classmate Matt Kleiman in the No. 1 doubles flight, bowing out in the quarterfinals. Kleiman went 3-1 at the No. 2 flight to reach the finals, where he fell 7-6, 6-2 to Alan Jesudason of Drexel.
 
Senior Zack Elliott and freshman Marc Blekhman represented Lehigh at the top flight. Elliott went 2-1, reaching the semifinals, while Blekhman lost his round of 16 match.
 
Sophomore Jordan Paul played in the No. 2 flight and battled back from a first round loss to advance to the consolation bracket final before falling 8-2 to an opponent from Drexel.
 
Senior Gary Fishkin was the representative for Lehigh at No. 3 singles, and went 1-1, losing in the quarterfinals.
 
Learner was one of four Mountain Hawks entered in No. 4 singles. Junior Michael Bukhalo went 3-1 and reached the semifinals in the main draw, while senior Andrew Nakhjavan and junior Steven Nazaroff bounced back from opening round losses to reach the consolation final. With two Lehigh players reaching the consolation final, that match was considered a no contest.
 
Doubles action was highlighted by the performance of Bukhalo and Paul, who reached the finals at the No. 2 flight before falling to a team from Drexel.
 
Elliott and Blekhman also entered at No. 1 doubles, while Fishkin and Nakhjavan played at No. 2, going 1-1 and reaching the quarterfinals.
 
Lehigh will close out its fall season when it sends players to the ITA Regionals, Oct. 14-19 in Philadelphia.
