BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Recent Lehigh men's lacrosse graduate Conor Gaffney is a CoSIDA Academic All-American for a fourth time, announced Friday, as Gaffney was named to the Men's At-Large second team for a second straight season. Gaffney was named a third team Academic All-American following his sophomore and junior years, then second team as a senior and now graduate student.
Â
Gaffney is the only four-time honoree among this year's Academic All-Americans At-Large team. Freshmen are not eligible for the award, so Gaffney has been named Academic All-District and All-America every year he's been eligible.
Â
In the classroom, Gaffney posted a 4.0 grade point average in graduate school after ending his undergraduate career with a 3.95 as a double major in mechanical engineering and integrated business and engineering (finance). Recently named a USILA Scholar All-American, Gaffney was a two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and three-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree (including 2020). Twice named a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, he was also a multi-time winner of the team's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Gaffney was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Honor Society and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He won the Elisha P. Wilbur Mathematics Award for the top performance in first-year engineering mathematics courses. Gaffney returned to Lehigh for a fifth year via the President's Scholarship program, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement of undergraduate students by providing a fifth year of study free of tuition.
On the field, Gaffney was selected in the Premiere Lacrosse League Collegiate Draft (the Mountain Hawks' first-ever selection) and made the Archers' roster, making his PLL debut on July 11 against the Cannons. Gaffney was named the 2019 Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year and an honorable mention postseason All-American by both the USILA and Inside Lacrosse. He was a preseason honorable mention All-American by Inside Lacrosse prior to the 2021 season. Gaffney finished his career winning 63.5 percent of his faceoffs (686-1081) with 401 groundballs, owning the program record for faceoff wins and groundballs (the GB total is also a Patriot League mark). Gaffney backed up junior Mike Sisselbrger in 2021, who broke the NCAA Division I record for faceoff percentage (79.5).
Â
Lehigh men's lacrosse has featured a CoSIDA Academic All-American five times, four by Gaffney and one by Jonathan Stumpf in 2011.
