Lehigh drops pair to GW at Diamond Nation Sunday

3/7/2021 11:36:00 PM | Baseball

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Playing at its home away from home for the Sunday doubleheader of the four-game set with George Washington, the Lehigh baseball team fell 4-3 in seven innings in the first game and 13-9 in the second at Diamond Nation. The Colonials (4-1) came from behind in each game to claim victory over the Mountain Hawks (2-4), collecting all four games in the series.

Sophomore catcher Adam Retzbach put Lehigh ahead early in the first game with his two-run home run, pushing the Mountain Hawks out in front, 2-0.

GW scored three times in the top of the fourth inning it 3-2 and the Mountain Hawks tied the game up in the sixth inning at 3-3 after Joe Gorla scored on a wild pitch.

With a runner on and one out, GW doubled in a run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 and pitching struck out the side in the bottom of the frame to come away with the 4-3 win.

Senior right-hander Matt Svanson had his second straight solid start for the Mountain Hawks, going five innings, allowing two earned runs while scattering five hits and striking out six batters. Despite allowing the run to score in the seventh, senior righty Sam Wurth pitched two solid innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Eric Cichocki continued his hot hand, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Retzbach's one hit was the two-run homer. Gorla went 2-for-3 with a triple and Casey Rother doubled earlier in the contest.

Moving ahead to Game 2, Retzbach continued to rake in the top of the first inning, homering once again, a two-run shot to right field scoring Rother to put the Mountain Hawks ahead, 2-0.

In the second, Chase Carlson singled in Cam Hubbard and was followed up by a Tyler Young double to score Carlson to extend the lead to 4-0.

GW battled back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs to tie the game back up at 4-4.

In the span of three innings, the Mountain Hawks continued their offensive outburst, starting in the top of the fourth with a Cichocki double to center field, advancing to third base on an error, scoring Young to pull Lehigh ahead, 5-4. Gerard Sweeney singled in Cichocki to make it 6-4 in the inning.

In the sixth with Sweeney and Young on, Rother doubled in the runner on third to give the Mountain Hawks a 7-4 advantage. Two more runs came across off the Joe Gorla double to extend the lead to 9-4.

That would be all she wrote however, as the Colonials capitalized on Mountain Hawk pitching by stringing together nine unanswered runs between the eighth and ninth innings to come away with the 13-9 victory, earning the series sweep.

Cichocki continued to hit for Lehigh in Game 2, going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and a sacrifice. Rother went 2-for-4 with another double, an RBI, a walk and two runs scored and Retzbach went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and three walks.

Junior lefty Matt Stamford got the start for Lehigh, throwing three innings and allowed one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Lucas Rich was solid in his collegiate debut, going four strong, allowing zero earned runs on two hits, three walks with five strikeouts.

The upcoming weekend games against Holy Cross were postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test among the Crusaders' Tier 1. The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to host Navy at Walker Field for a doubleheader on March 20 at noon.
