
Mountain Hawks fall 5-2 to JMU; Fishkin and Learner notch wins in singles

ORLANDO, Fla. – Down in Orlando on Sunday, the Lehigh men's tennis team kicked off its spring break trip with a 5-2 loss to the James Madison Dukes. The Mountain Hawks are competing in their first of three matches over the next three days down in the Sunshine State.
With competition beginning in doubles, the Dukes took it to Lehigh to win the doubles point, the top pair of Zack Elliott and Harry Wang dropped a match, 6-3, while Jeremy Learner and Steven Nazaroff battled to a 6-2 loss.
After dropping the doubles point to James Madison, Lehigh turned up its energy and raised the level of play. In all, three of the six singles matches went to three sets, as Gary Fishkin in the No. 3 spot and Learner in the No. 6 spot picked up wins in three-setters. Fishkin won, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, while Learner won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Both players showed adversity and determination by overcoming a loss in the first set.
In the top spot, the sophomore Elliott and JMU's Alvaro Arce put on a show, as the two exchanged back-and-forth points. Ultimately, Arce edged Elliott for the win in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4. Jacob Edelchik also dropped a heartbreaking three-setter at the No. 4 spot. Edelchik dropped the contest in straight sets, however both sets went to the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5).
At the No. 2 spot, Wang was defeated by JMU's Holden Koons, 6-2, 6-4.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will look to get the sour taste out of their mouth, as the men will square off with Bentley tomorrow.
