SANFORD, Fla. — The Lehigh baseball team stayed with Pitt through the first six and a half innings Friday afternoon, but the Mountain Hawks gave up 11 runs in the final two frames to fall, 15-4 against the Panthers to open the weekend series. The loss is Lehigh's sixth in the first seven games, falling to 1-6 to start the 2020 season, while Pitt improves to 7-1.
It was a solid first three innings on the mound for junior left-hander Cameron Van Hoorebeke, who allowed seven hits total including three earned runs in the fourth inning, when he was pulled for sophomore Casey Rother. Those first three innings were scoreless for Van Hoorebeke, keeping the Panthers at bay as the Mountain Hawks looked to get runs on the board.
The bottom of the fourth inning was eventful for Pitt, as the team got a leadoff double, a single through the left side, and a balk brought in the first runner. Sky Duff hit a two-run home run to give Pitt an early 3-0 advantage.
Pitt added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a home run off Rother, as the Panthers surged out in front, 4-0.
Two runs came across in the top of the seventh inning for Lehigh, cutting the deficit in half, as Adam Retzbach started the inning singling through the left side. He ended up advancing to second on a passed ball before Charlie Von Werne doubled to left center, scoring Retzbach to give Lehigh its first run of the game.
Two batters later, with two outs, Jake Kochmansky came through again with a single to right field, making the score 4-2.
That would be all Pitt needed to put the game out of reach, bringing six runs home in the bottom of the seventh inning and five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 15-2 lead over Lehigh.
Lehigh got its final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth when Eric Cichocki singled to left field, scoring Kochmansky and Gerard Sweeney scored on a wild pitch. Pitt ended up prevailing in the end after Joe Yupp popped up to the shortstop, getting the 15-4 victory.
Kochmansky led the way by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Von Werne went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a double and an RBI, and Retzbach was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Six pitchers threw for the Mountain Hawks, including three making their pitching debuts, with Rother, Ben Christian and Ryan Staropoli making their first appearances on the mound this year.
Lehigh will turn its focus to Central Connecticut State Saturday morning at 11 a.m. before taking on Pitt in a rematch at 3 p.m.
