Sophomore right-hander Mason Black was spectacular for Lehigh in the first game of the day, following his lights out performance last weekend at Richmond with another one. Black (1-2) went six strong innings, striking out nine batters, allowing one run, none earned over three hits with just one walk. The outing allowed Black to register his first win of the year.
Freshman Adam Retzbach kicked off the morning with a two-RBI single in the top of the first inning, scoring both Casey Rother and Tony Gallo to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead.
Gallo doubled in Gerard Sweeney in the top of the third inning to push Lehigh ahead, 3-0, before Rother flied out to center, scoring Zack Miles on the sacrifice fly. That gave the Mountain Hawks an early 4-0 lead.
The Blue Devils got their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when a groundout to shortstop brought a runner in to score.
The top of the eighth inning was eventful for the Mountain Hawks with Rother homering for the first time in his career, giving Lehigh a 5-1 advantage. A couple batters later, Mike Maguire homered, driving in Retzbach to extend the lead to 7-1.
The bottom of the eighth inning was when CCSU started to rally, scoring four runs off junior right-hander Yash Rane, which only one was earned.
Freshman Ryan Deom came into the game in the eighth inning, going 1.1 innings, with no runs and no hits, one walk and two strikeouts to secure his first career save.
Gallo had his fourth multi-hit game of the season so far when he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Matt Hand also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double.
After falling 15-4 on Friday against Pitt, the Mountain Hawks got right back to work with the Panthers in Game 2 on Saturday, but to no avail, as Pitt picked up the 10-0 victory in seven innings.
Pitt picked up runs in the second, third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings including four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth.
Junior right-hander Matt Svanson went 3.1 innings, allowing seven earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Will Grisack allowed three earned runs over five hits with seven strikeouts in his outing before Nick Pave pitched the last of the game for the Mountain Hawks.
Only one player registered a hit for Lehigh, Casey Rother, who went 1-for-3 for the afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks close out play in Florida on Sunday morning with a 9 a.m. battle against Central Connecticut State. This will be the final game before Lehigh returns to J. David Walker Field to host Coppin State Wednesday afternoon.
