NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team went on a 6-1 run to turn 10-6 deficit into a 12-11 lead, but Vanderbilt responded with the equalizer in regulation and game-winner in overtime to hand the Mountain Hawks a 13-12 defeat on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sondra Dickey continued her scoring barrage, netting five goals to increase her season total to 21 in four games. Freshman Katia Carnevale also scored three, as Lehigh (now 2-2 on the season) came so close to its first-ever win against the Commodores.
Â
Along with Dickey and Carnevale, junior Cecily Redfern and sophomore Maggie Kelly also scored multiple goals (two apiece). Freshman Gabby Schneider added two assists, and a team-high two caused turnovers. Redfern posted a game-high six draw controls while junior Hannah Cermack had four and Dickey collected three.
Â
Vanderbilt jumped out to quick leads of 2-0 and 4-1 before consecutive Carnevale goals pulled the Mountain Hawks within 4-3 with 19:01 left in the first half. The Commodores answered with four of the next five goals to take an 8-4 advantage, early in the second half. But that's when Lehigh began clicking on offense.
Â
The Mountain Hawks scored four of the next six goals and eight of the next 11, all in the span of 16:26. All five of Dickey's markers came in that span, including three consecutive Lehigh goals to get her side within 11-9 with 13:05 remaining. Redfern, Dickey again and Kelly made it four straight Mountain Hawk goals and gave Lehigh its first lead at 12-11 with 8:20 on the clock.
Â
However, Vanderbilt responded by netting the equalizer with 3:40 left in regulation and 2:29 into the extra session for the 13-12 final.
Â
For the game, the Commodores held a 27-25 edge in shots and 20-17 advantage in groundballs. Lehgih finished with a 14-13 advantage in draw controls. Junior Samantha Sagi made eight saves for the Mountain Hawks across a pair of Vanderbilt goalkeepers, who combined for seven.
Â
Lehigh now returns home next Saturday, Feb. 29 to host Monmouth at 12 p.m. at the first game of a Lehigh Lacrosse doubleheader.
