
Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday at Vanderbilt

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a valiant effort at Penn State last weekend, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team heads to Nashville, Tennessee to face Vanderbilt on Saturday. Gametime is set for 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. locally). The Mountain Hawks and Commodores, who enter with identical 2-1 records, will square off for the first time since 2008.

Last time out at Penn State, the Mountain Hawks fell behind 6-1 (and 8-3 at the half), but outscored the Nittany Lions in the second to pull within 13-9 at the final horn. Lehigh ended the game with six of the final eight goals to pull as close as three (12-9) with 3:43 remaining, but couldn't cut the margin any further.
Senior Sondra Dickey led the charge, posting five goals and two assists, one game after seven goals and an assist at UMBC. Along with her eight-point effort at UMBC, that earned her Patriot League Midfield of the Week for the first time this season and eighth time in her career. Dickey is up to 16 points (currently second in the nation), three assists, seven groundballs, eight caused turnovers and 12 draw controls on the season. Freshman Gabby Schneider dished three assists to increase her season total to 11 – tied for fourth nationally. Junior Hannah Cermack had two goals and an assist while freshman Katia Carnevale scored twice as well.
Vanderbilt has played all its games on the road, beating Wagner (14-11), falling at No. 5 Boston College (15-12) then topping Kennesaw State (21-11). Last season, the Commodores finished 10-6, 2-3 in the American Athletic Conference. A trio of players lead the team in points with Brianne Gross (nine goals, two assists), Emily Mathewson (nine goals, two assists) and Gabby Fornia (six goals, five assists) each owning 11 points. Gross and Mathewson are first and second on the team in draw controls with 12 and 11, respectively. Fornia and Mathewson were each named Preseason All-Conference in January while the Commodores were picked third in the poll (behind Florida and Cincinnati and ahead of Temple, UConn and ECU). Paige Gunning has seen the majority of time in goal, owning a 12.75 goals against average and 34.5 save percentage.
Vanderbilt leads the all-time series, 3-0. The teams have played in 1997 (14-6), 2007 (21-4) and 2008 (18-8). The most recent meeting was at Lehigh while the teams last played in Nashville in 2007.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home next Saturday, Feb. 29 to host Monmouth at 12 p.m. at the first game of a Lehigh Lacrosse doubleheader.
