Mountain Hawks put forth valiant effort in 13-9 loss at Penn State

2/15/2020 8:33:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team rattled off a 6-1 second-half run to pull within three of Penn State, but couldn't get any close as the Nittany Lions closed out a 13-9 win on Saturday afternoon at Panzer Stadium. Sondra Dickey led the charge with another outstanding game. The senior had a hand in seven of the Mountain Hawks' nine goals (five goals, two assists), one game after eight points (seven goals, one assist) at UMBC. Lehigh now stands 2-1 on the season, ahead of a trip to Vanderbilt next weekend.

Dickey scored her five goals on just seven shots, while adding three groundballs, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. She now has 16 goals through three games this season. Junior Hannah Cermack scored two goals and dished an assist, freshman Katia Carnevale scored twice and freshman Gabby Schneider tallied three assists to up her season total to 11. After Tuesday's game at UMBC, her eight helpers were leading the nation. Cermack also had three groundballs, a draw control and caused turnover.

Defensively, senior Alexandra Ladda recorded two groundballs and a caused turnover, as did junior goalkeeper Samantha Sagi.

Cermack opened the scoring just over two minutes in to give Lehigh a 1-0 advantage. Penn State answered with seven straight goals, but Dickey and Cermack scored consecutive goals to pull within 7-3 late in the stanza.

The Nittany Lions answered with four straight bridging the end of the first and beginning of the second, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go down quietly.

Lehigh scored four straight goals (three off the stick of Dickey), while holding the Nittany Lions scoreless for 16:47. Penn State scored at the 8:21 mark, but the Mountain Hawks came right back with two more. After Dickey's fifth with 3:43 remaining, Lehigh was within 12-9. However, Penn State added an insurance goal with 2:17 on the clock for the 13-9 final.

In the end, the Mountain Hawks' defense allowed just one goal in the span of 22:51 and two over the game's final 25:08.

Penn State finished with a 29-25 edge in shots and 14-10 advantage in draw controls. Lehigh held a 13-12 edge in groundballs. Sagi finished with eight saves over the game's first 41:13 before being relieved by sophomore Kerry McHugh, who stopped three of five shots sent her way.

Next up, the Mountain Hawks play their third straight road game when they travel to Vanderbilt on Saturday, Feb. 22 to face the Commodores.
