BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team gets back to work at home on Saturday afternoon, taking on Army West Point at 2 p.m. from Stabler Arena on Play4Kay day. In addition to the special game, the 2009-10 Patriot League Championship team will be honored at halftime of the game, celebrating 10 years since the Mountain Hawks won their third title in program history.
After back-to-back victories over Army West Point and Lafayette, it looked like Lehigh turned a corner after dropping four consecutive games, the team's longest losing streak in two seasons.
But the Mountain Hawks lost their grasp on a 24-point lead at Holy Cross Wednesday evening, dropping a 65-62 heartbreaker to the Crusaders in Worcester.
Now, with just six games remaining before the Patriot League Tournament, Lehigh has work to do to elevate itself from its current sixth place standing. The team is a game behind Lafayette, Colgate and Boston University, while three games behind first place Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks still face the Raiders twice and Terriers and Bison one more time this season.
The Mountain Hawks found themselves dominating Holy Cross in the first half and for much of the third quarter with that 24-point lead with 4:37 to play in the frame. Two players finished with a double-double for the first time since the win over Seton Hall on Nov. 22. Cameryn Benz had 16 points with a season-high 11 rebounds, while Camryn Buhr finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists. Buhr's double-double was her second in as many games. Mary Clougherty added 10 points to the fold, her third consecutive game scoring in double-figures.
For most of this season, the bench has been the key to Lehigh's success, but on Wednesday, it was out-scored by Holy Cross, 16-13 with Clougherty getting the bulk of the scoring done off the pine. Mariah Sexe had two points, while Clair Steele contributed a single point.
For Buhr, she has been the Mountain Hawks' most consistent scoring option as of late, scoring in double-figures in eight of her last nine games. She leads the team with 18 such games this season out of the 23 games played so far.
This season has been one to forget for Army West Point, falling in its last seven games dating back to Jan. 18 against Loyola, after beating Holy Cross at home, 61-48 on Jan. 15.
It's been nearly a month since the Black Knights last won a game, but the team has at least been competitive in losses since falling to Lehigh on Feb. 1.
Army fell to American at home on Feb. 8, 67-62 in overtime. The Black Knights led the Eagles by two points with seven seconds left in regulation, but Indeya Sanders got a layup to fall with less than a second left to force OT.
Army West Point cut the deficit as close as two points in the overtime period, but that's as far as it got. Kate Murray led the way with 15 points, Hope Brown added 11 and Lindsey Scamman had nine. Usually a major scoring threat, Alisa Fallon instead did work to clean the glass, finishing with 15 rebounds, including 13 defensive to pace the team.
The Black Knights are most recently coming off a tough loss at Lafayette on Wednesday, by a score of 67-58. Army had a one-point lead with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, but the Leopards went on a 18-1 run between the third and fourth quarters to come away with the win.
Sarah Bohn and Natalie Stralkus paced Army with 12 points each, while Fallon had nine and Brown eight.
Like other Patriot League opponents, the matchup between Army and Lehigh goes way back, all the way to the 1983-84 season with Patriot League play kicking off in 1991.
The Black Knights lead the all-time series, 35-34, but the Mountain Hawks have taken the last three matchups between the two teams, sweeping the season series in 2018-19 and getting a dominant victory at West Point earlier this month.
Saturday's game will be aired on Service Electric 2 Sports, streamed live on the Patriot League Network and live audio will be provided on Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the call. That pre-game show will begin at 1:50 p.m.
