Lehigh Starts Patriot League Play 1-0 Securing a Road Win Over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Lehigh women's basketball earned its first Patriot League victory of the season with a 77-66 win over Army on Saturday. With the win, Lehigh starts 1-0 in Patriot League play and improves to 5-7 overall on the season. The Black Knights fall to 9-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
The Mountain Hawks shot a season-best 52% from the field and 50% from 3-point range, knocking down nine of 18 attempts from beyond the arc. Six of those nine 3-pointers came in the first half. Lehigh also converted a season-high 24 of 27 free throws. Defensively, the Mountain Hawks held Army to 40% shooting from the field and just 18% from 3-point range.
"Throughout nonleague play, our team learned a lot of lessons in terms of dealing with adversity," head coach Addie Micir said. "It was good to see our team play together. Army is a tough team, and we knew they would make a run. I'm proud of the way we responded and played this afternoon."
Junior Whitney Lind and senior Lily Fandre each scored 18 points for the Mountain Hawks. Fandre knocked down three of five 3-point attempts and has now scored in double figures in six consecutive games. Lind also went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and converted 7-of-8 free-throw attempts.
For the Black Knights, Taylor Wilson led the way with 20 points. Kya Smith added 18 points and six assists.
How it Happened
The Mountain Hawks were ready for Patriot League play, as Fandre, Lind and Alana Reddy each knocked down a 3-pointer in the first quarter. Leia Edwards added six points in the paint, shooting 3-for-4 from the field, to help Lehigh take a 15-12 lead after one quarter.
Two more 3-pointers from Lind, followed by a 3 from Jessie Ozzauto, allowed Lehigh to continue its hot shooting. Edwards added four more points in the second to finish with 10. Lehigh shot 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first half, outscored Army 23-11 in the second quarter and led 36-23 at the break.
Army doubled its first and second quarter total in the third and outscored Lehigh 24-18. The Mountain Hawks maintained their lead by shooting 12-for-14 from the free-throw line and carried a 56-47 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Mountain Hawks keep the Black Knights at arm's length. Belle Bramer, who finished with 16 points, scored eight of them in the quarter, including converting a three-point play with just over three minutes remaining to put Lehigh ahead by nine. Less than a minute later, she drained a 3-pointer to give the Mountain Hawks a 72-58 lead with 2:38 to play. Lehigh added a few more free throws down the stretch to secure a 77-66 victory over Army.
