BETHLEHEM, Pa. -Â Lehigh defeated Loyola Maryland 68-54 in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament, Monday night at Stabler Arena. With the win, Lehigh moves to 16-13 overall on the season and advances to the Patriot League semifinals for the second consecutive year and will face No. 1 seed Navy in Annapolis on Thursday night for a spot in the championship game.
Gracyn Lovette led the way for Lehigh, scoring a career-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and a lights-out 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Lovette, who led the Patriot League in assists per game during the regular season, also dished out eight assists, one shy of her career high.
Belle Bramer netted 16 for the Mountain Hawks, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor while creating three steals on the defensive side of the ball.Â
Each team shot 45% from the field and 27% from 3-point range, but the difference in the game was how Lehigh started and closed the contest. Lehigh jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter, with Lovette and Whitney Lind each scoring five points during the early run to help Lehigh build a lead it would never relinquish. Each team added a few more points as the period wound down, with Lehigh leading 22-13 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Loyola found its rhythm. After Lehigh built a 12-point lead, the Greyhounds climbed back into the game as the period went on. A 3-pointer from Amandine Amorich, Loyola's second-leading scorer on the evening, cut Lehigh's halftime lead to six, 34-28.
Lex Therien of Loyola, who scored a game-high 20 points, began to heat up in the third quarter, scoring eight in the period and helping the Greyhounds remain within striking distance. Lily Fandre and Alana Reddy each knocked down 3-pointers, while Lovette and Bramer continued to provide consistent offense for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks remained up six, 49-43, heading to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Mountain Hawks were able to pull away to clinch their spot in the semifinals. A 14-6 run, fueled by Lovette that was capped off by a Leia Edwards three, gave Lehigh the distance they needed to clinch the 68-54 victory at Stabler Arena.Â
