Lehigh Tops Cornell 66-52 For Second Straight Win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Lily Fandre and first-year Leia Edwards both scored 21 points as the Lehigh women's basketball team picked up its second consecutive victory with a 66-52 win over Cornell Wednesday night at Stabler Arena. A 20-point fourth quarter helped Lehigh turn a seven-point lead after three quarters into the 14-point win.
With Lehigh limited to eight available players, four Mountain Hawks logged more than 35 minutes Wednesday night. Lehigh shot 44 percent from the field and limited Cornell to just 36 percent shooting.
Fandre's 21 points came on 8-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-5 from deep. She added four rebounds. Edwards made 7-of-11 from the field including 3-of-5 from 3-point land and added a team-high nine boards and five assists.
Lehigh started fast, shooting 50 percent from the field to take a 19-11 lead after one quarter. Fandre scored eight of Lehigh's 19 points while first-year Ellie Mjaanes added five in the first quarter.
A steal and fast break layup by first-year Alana Reddy gave Lehigh a 12-point lead early in the second quarter. Cornell battled back to within six, 32-26 at halftime.
An Edwards 3-pointer put Lehigh back up 11 in the third quarter, but the Big Red pulled within three on a Paige Engels driving layup with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. Lehigh led 46-39 after three.
In the fourth, Cornell pulled as close as five with 6:44 to play, but Lehigh outscored the Big Red 17-8 the rest of the way.
Reddy and Mjaanes both chipped in eight points with Reddy matching her career high. She added four rebounds and three steals.
Senior Katie Hurt made her first career start and contributed six points and three assists over 37 minutes.
Emily Pape scored 18 points and added six rebounds to lead Cornell (4-5). She was the only Big Red player in double figures.
Lehigh won the rebounding battle 30-27.
The Mountain Hawks (4-5) will travel to Mount St. Mary's on Sunday for their final game before the final exam break. Game time is set for 2 p.m. from Emmitsburg, Md.
