Lehigh Fails to Summit Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday

12/7/2025 5:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EMMITSBURG, Md. - In the final game of the fall semester, Lehigh women's basketball traveled south to take on the Mount Saint Mary's Mountaineers. A strong second quarter from the Mountaineers was the difference as Lehigh fell 75-64 on Sunday afternoon at Knott Arena.

Junior Jessie Ozzauto scored 23 to lead the Mountain Hawks, but after a tightly contested first quarter, Lehigh could not match the Mountaineers' blazing pace. The Mountain Hawks made a late push in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.

Neither team found much separation in the first quarter, and the Mountain Hawks only trailed the Mountaineers by two at the end of the opening stanza. Lehigh went out launching shots from distance, throwing up nine three-pointers in the first frame, but only three found the bottom of the net.

Mount St. Mary's caught fire in the second, dropping 30 points on 80% three-point shooting while limiting Lehigh to just one triple. Senior Lily Fandre did her best to keep the Mountain Hawks in range, scoring her first nine points after missing time in the previous quarter with an injury. However, the Mountaineers forced seven turnovers in the frame to secure a 45-31 lead heading into halftime.

The Mountaineers' defense played strong into the third quarter, limiting Lehigh to only three made field goals. Despite the lack of production from the field, an 80% mark from the free throw line kept the Mountain Hawks within striking distance. First-year Ellie Mjaanes was the biggest offensive factor for Lehigh, hitting a three and a turnaround fadeaway jumper in the quarter.

The Mountain Hawks came to life in the fourth quarter, going on a 13-4 run in the first six minutes of the final period. It was Ozzauto and first-year Leia Edwards who led the charge, scoring 12 of the 13 points to bring the deficit down to nine. Despite outsourcing the Mountaineers by seven throughout the quarter, the push was not enough to finish the job.

Alana Powell led Mount St. Mary's with a career high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Grace Kennerly also contributed 17 points and a career high seven steals.

Edwards added 17 points and ten rebounds for Lehigh to earn her second double-double in three games. Fandre contributed 13 points as well.

Rebounds favored Mount St. Mary's 46-35. The Mountaineers forced Lehigh into 20 turnovers while committing 16.

The Mountain Hawks (4-6) next compete on December 20, where they travel to Towson.
