WORCESTER, Mass. - Lehigh improved to 3-0 in Patriot League play and 7-7 overall with a 60-57 win over Holy Cross on Wednesday night. The Crusaders fell to 2-1 in league play and 8-6 overall.
With the victory, Lehigh remains the only undefeated team in Patriot League play.
Senior Lily Fandre reached the 1,000-point milestone in the first quarter, becoming the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 career points at Lehigh, and led the Mountain Hawks with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field.
Fandre scored 17 of her 23 points in the first half and finished four points shy of her career high. She shot 6-of-9 from the field in the first half and went 3-of-6 from 3-point range, with her milestone basket coming on a 3-pointer from the left corner.
"Those 1,000 points were hard-earned, and Lily did it the right way, unselfishly and within the flow of our system," head coach Addie Micir said. "Every point mattered, and we're looking forward to many more."
Junior Jessie Ozzauto added 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting with seven of her 17 coming in fourth.
"It was a really solid team win with different players stepping up at different moments," Micir said. "Lily got us started, Leia did a great job holding down the boards, Jessie had a big finish and Gracyn Lovett hit a huge three. We need everyone, especially when we're getting everyone's best. Holy Cross is a really good team and hard to beat on their home floor, we had to fight because they wouldn't go away."
Coach Micir highlighted Fandre's hot start, as she scored 12 points in the opening quarter on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Ozzauto added four points in the first, while Leia Edwards collected five rebounds, leading to second-chance points for the Mountain Hawks, who held a 22-13 lead after the first.
In the second quarter, Holy Cross crept back into the game with a 7-2 start. Meg Cahalan controlled the Crusaders' offense and finished the half with nine points. For the Mountain Hawks, Fandre added five points in the period, including a 3-pointer while being fouled. Lehigh carried a 35-30 lead into halftime.
The third quarter started off slow, compared to the first half. Both teams struggled to score and each team was better on the defensive side of the ball. Later in the quarter the offense picked up, Alana Reddy knocked down a three and Fandre hit three free throws late in the period to help the Mountain Hawks carry a six point lead into the fourth.
The two sides traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter. Jessie Ozzauto attacked the basket three separate times for three scores early in the period, helping Lehigh maintain a lead of around five points.
Holy Cross answered behind Kendall Eddie, who scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull the Crusaders within two with under two minutes to play. With Lehigh leading 56-54, Gracyn Lovette drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was winding down to push the Mountain Hawks' lead back to five late.
The Mountain Hawks were able to close out the final possessions and secure a 60-57 victory.
