Buhr's 36 powers Mountain Hawks to 89-72 win over Army

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — It was a day to remember on Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena, as the Lehigh women's basketball team led for most of the game despite a second quarter scare, pulling away from Army West Point for the 89-72 victory on Play4Kay day.

Senior Camryn Buhr poured in a career performance, finishing with a career-high 36 points on 13-of-21 shooting with 13 rebounds. She finished just one point shy of tying Lehigh's single-game scoring record, held by Liz Feeley since Mar. 5, 1986. Buhr passed Feeley (1,275 points) on the all-time scoring list earlier in the day. Buhr currently sits at 1,288 career points, 13th in program history.
In addition to Buhr's day, sophomore Emma Grothaus scored a career-high 25 points with six rebounds, three steals and three assists. She went 10-for-17 from the floor on the day.

"I honestly didn't know she was over 30 points," said head coach Sue Troyan after the win. "But Cam puts so much pressure on herself to perform. We've said that she can just go out there, have fun and enjoy it. She did have a game like that, didn't expect her to drop 36 today. Big game for her and for us.

"It was a complete game for her, she did it all and I'm excited for her, because it feels like she's been on an up-and-down stretch during league play. She's one for us that is so important in terms of consistency and I think it also helps when you have someone like Emma stepping up like she did today."

It seemed like it was going to be a runaway for the Mountain Hawks in the first frame, going on a 24-5 run to end the quarter, leading 26-8 by the end. Grothaus had already gotten herself to 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor, going with Buhr's nine first quarter points.

The second quarter started off the way the first went for the Mountain Hawks with a jumper from Buhr and a layup from Grothaus to extend Lehigh's lead to 22 points, up 30-8 with 7:59 to go in the period. That lead would be the furthest the Mountain Hawks would get away from the Black Knights for the rest of the game as Army went on a 24-10 run to end the half, closing the gap to just six points heading into halftime.

The Black Knights had a furious second quarter, making 10 of their 17 shots from the field for 58.8 percent, while shooting a cool 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from beyond-the-arc.

Megan Walker opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to extend Lehigh's lead to nine points, leading 43-34. After Lindsey Scamman made free throws with 5:01 left, the Mountain Hawks had a 10-point lead at the media timeout with 4:49 to play.

Lehigh and Army battled neck-and-neck for most of the rest of the quarter, the Mountain Hawks getting their lead out to as many as 13 to end the frame, leading 63-50 heading into the fourth quarter. Buhr had a highly efficient third quarter with 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting with two free throws made on as many attempts.

Steele hit a 3-point jumper with 9:29 left in the fourth to extend Lehigh's lead to 16 points, up 66-50. Cameryn Benz then had two free throws to put the Mountain Hawks up by 18, their largest lead of the quarter.

After the media timeout with 7:34 to play in the fourth, a Hope Brown layup brought the Black Knights back within eight points, on a 12-2 run. Scamman made one of two on free throws to up that run to 13-2 before Steele made a jumper in the paint with 5:44 left to increase Lehigh's lead back to nine points.

The Mountain Hawks ended up finishing out the quarter on a 16-9 run to come away with the 89-72, 17-point victory over Army.

Aside from 36 for Buhr and 25 for Grothaus, Steele finished with a season-high 11 points to pace the bench. Walker had nine points, while Hannah Hedstrom finished with three points, three assists and five rebounds.

The Mountain Hawks shot 44.8 percent (30-for-67) from the field, 35 percent (7-for-20) from downtown and 75.9 percent (22-for-29) from the free throw line. Having difficulty in that area for most of the season, the points from the foul line were an important facet of the victory for Lehigh.

"We needed that today," said Troyan. "It seemed like we went through a stretch where we didn't make too many, so I'm surprised we made as many as we did. But in terms of us just being good getting to the line and finishing is going to be important."

Lehigh scored 30 points of 21 Army turnovers, while turning the ball over 16 times leading to 14 Army points. The Mountain Hawks had 15 second chance points, 19 points off fast-breaks and 42 of their 89 points were in the paint. Lehigh led for almost the entirety of the game, besides an eight-second stretch for the Black Knights when the Mountain Hawks trailed by one at the 9:22 mark in the first quarter.

"Hopefully we learn, in many ways today was a microcosm of the Holy Cross game, in many, many ways," Troyan said. "The difference being in this game, when they made their run in the fourth quarter, we responded with one of our own.

"That's growth, we could've easily been saying 'here we go again,' but they buckled down and the seniors knew what they needed to do. That's going to be important to us. We're a really good team when we can put it all together, and eliminating the runs is going to be important the rest of the way."

In addition to their high-scoring games, there were a lot of marks that hadn't been reached by a Lehigh player in quite some time, as Buhr and Grothaus both got there on Saturday.

It was the first time since Feb. 11, 2017 vs. Holy Cross that the Mountain Hawks had two 20 or more point scorers (Quinci Mann 23, Gena Grundhoffer 20).

Buhr's 36 was the first time since Mann (32) on Jan. 24, 2018 at Loyola that a player had 30 or more points in a single game. The last time a Mountain Hawk had 10 or more field goals in a game was Hailey Pascoe (10) during the Patriot League Quarterfinals last year vs. Colgate. Buhr finished with 13, Grothaus had 10.

Lehigh continues its stretch at home on Wednesday evening, welcoming Colgate for the first time this season to Stabler Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
