Lehigh's third quarter struggles ends in loss vs. Colgate

2/19/2020 9:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Leading by as many as three points with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter, the Lehigh women's basketball team fell down and couldn't recover, falling to Colgate 82-73 Wednesday evening at Stabler Arena. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Mountain Hawks at home.

Coming off a strong career-high 25-point performance against Army West Point over the weekend, sophomore forward Emma Grothaus got back to work and came through with a 21-point night with seven rebounds, going 7-for-11 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Senior point guard Hannah Hedstrom added a career-high 15 points, going 5-for-7 from the field with four assists and two rebounds.

"Our turnovers really did us in tonight," said head coach Sue Troyan. "We're going to look back at it and not taking care of the basketball on the offensive end and one of the keys to slowing them (Colgate) down is slow down their transition game."

Colgate had Lehigh's number in the first quarter, as the game was tied at 6-6 with 6:08 remaining, but the Raiders went on a 15-8 run with 2:20 to play to lead by seven, 21-14. Cameryn Benz scored with 20 seconds left to trim the deficit to five points, but Tegan Graham answered back with a layup with a second on the clock to extend the lead to seven heading into the second.

The Mountain Hawks opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to re-take the lead, 24-23 with 7:01 left in the quarter. The Raiders got the lead back out to three points with a jumper from Rachel Thompson heading into the media timeout at the 4:30 mark. Trailing by four points with 3:39 to play, a Camryn Buhr 3-pointer and a then a layup for the senior gave Lehigh back the lead, 31-30 with 1:50 left. The Raiders ended up closing the quarter with a Taylor Langan 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to give Colgate a one-point lead heading into the locker room at the half.

Despite its struggles to hold onto leads as of late, the Mountain Hawks had first half success in staying close to Colgate down to the very end. Lehigh shot 43.8 percent (14-for-32) from the field but only 22.2 percent (2-for-9) from the 3-point line. Colgate had its struggles from beyond, shooting 30 percent (3-for-10), but shot 41.2 percent (14-for-34) from the field.

It was all Colgate in the third quarter, fighting back from down three points with 7:29 left in the third to going on a dominant 20-7 run in the next six minutes or so to lead 59-48 heading into the final frame. The Raiders shot the lights out in the third quarter, going 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from the field, while Lehigh shot 36.4 percent (4-for-11) from the field, but shot 87.5 percent (7-for-8) from the charity stripe.

Lehigh trailed by as many as 20 points with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter before Troyan called a 30-second timeout. The Mountain Hawks cut the deficit to as little as eight points after three and-1's from Grothaus, Hedstrom and Clougherty. Lehigh continued to hit its free throws, which kept the team in the game in the closing minutes. Thompson made a free throw with 33 seconds left, as Colgate held on for the 82-73 victory.
"This is a game that we can learn a lot from," said Troyan. "We're going to have to learn a lot when we go up to Hamilton in a couple weeks and play them again. They're a talented team and Thompson is one of the best players in the league, she showed that today in her ability to score the ball and someone that can capitalize on our mistakes."

Four Lehigh players scored in double-figures with Grothaus (21), Hedstrom (15), Benz (11) and Clougherty (11). Buhr was so close to her fourth straight double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists.
The Mountain Hawks shot well from the field at 41.9 percent (26-for-62), but struggled from beyond-the-arc at 13.3 percent (2-for-15). Colgate shot 47.1 percent (32-for-68) from the field and 35 percent (7-for-20) from the 3-point line.

Lehigh has allowed a lot of 20-point scorers through the course of the season and a few 30-point scorers, as Rachel Thompson was another one of those for Colgate. The senior guard finished with 33 points, going 16-for-24 from the field, adding 14 rebounds and six assists.

The Mountain Hawks committed 18 turnovers in the game, turning the ball over more than their opponent for just the third time this season. Colgate had 12 giveaways Wednesday night. The Raiders scored 21 points off those 18 Lehigh turnovers.

"I didn't think we were great on the defensive end tonight," Troyan said. "We had some mental breakdowns honestly. We're going to have tighten it up, we talked a lot about that, but it starts on both ends of the court."

The lead changed eight times with six ties, with Colgate leading by as many as 20 points. The Raiders held the lead for 32:09 while the Mountain Hawks had the lead for just 4:43.

Lehigh will head back on the road Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. date with first place Bucknell at Sojka Pavilion. The Mountain Hawks fell to the Bison at Stabler earlier this season, 71-50 on Jan. 18.
