Late run insufficient, as Mountain Hawks fall to Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Marred by a hot spurt by the opponent late in the third quarter, the Lehigh women's basketball team had a late surge in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late, as the Mountain Hawks fell to Bucknell, 67-56 Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.
The loss drops Lehigh to 16-10 overall and 8-7 in the Patriot League, still even with Holy Cross for the fifth seed in the standings. The Mountain Hawks have lost two straight games and have just three games remaining before the Patriot League Tournament begins.
"We saw some good things and some competitive things in the first half," said head coach Sue Troyan. "The game got away from us in the beginning of the fourth quarter. I thought we made a good run towards the end though and played aggressively throughout the game."
Offensively, Lehigh was led by senior point guard Hannah Hedstrom, who finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes.
"Hannah is playing how you want a senior to play right now," Troyan said. "She's going to leave everything out on the court these last games and has given her heart and soul out there.
"She's playing tough on both ends of the floor. I thought she defended well, executed well on the offensive end and it's what you want from a senior, honestly."
The first quarter was, for the most part, evenly balanced between both teams. Lehigh had it tied up a couple of times to start before the Bison took an 11-9 lead at the media timeout with 2:26 left. Bucknell closed the quarter on a 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead heading to the second.
The Mountain Hawks cut the deficit to as little as two points early in the second quarter, but Bucknell had a 5-2 push to close the quarter to lead the Mountain Hawks by seven points, 29-22 heading into halftime.
Hedstrom led the way scoring for the Mountain Hawks in the first half, but Lehigh struggled from the floor, shooting just 28.6 percent (8-for-28) and 20 percent (1-for-5) from beyond-the-arc.
Lehigh cut the deficit from 10 points to start the third to four points after back-to-back buckets from Megan Walker and Mariah Sexe with 4:17 to play, but the Bison ramped up the lead back to eight points with 1:29 to go after a pair of Abby Kapp free throws. Mary Clougherty hit a jumper with 45 seconds left, but the Bison got a buzzer-beater to fall, a 3-pointer for Ally Johnson to take a 51-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bucknell led by as many as 18 points with 5:49 on the clock, up 58-40 in the fourth quarter, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go quietly. Lehigh went on a 14-6 run over the next three minutes or so to come within 10 points with 2:43 left after Clougherty nailed a 3-point jumper.
Ellie Mack got her 1,000th career point on a 3-pointer with 1:39 to play to put the game on ice before Hedstrom scored Lehigh's final points of the contest on a jumper with seven seconds on the clock, as the Mountain Hawks fell by 11 points, 67-56.
"When we needed big rebounds, we didn't get them and Bucknell capitalized on that with offensive rebounds and putbacks," said Troyan.
Scoring was spread pretty evenly for the Mountain Hawks with Emma Grothaus scoring nine points, followed by Clougherty with eight, Camryn Buhr with seven and Cameryn Benz with six points.
Lehigh shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the field and just 25 percent (4-for-16) from long range. The Mountain Hawks went 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from the free throw line.
For just the fourth time this season and now in consecutive games, the Mountain Hawks had more turnovers (15) than their opponent (12).
Lehigh will look to snap its losing streak on the road at Boston University on Wednesday evening.
