Mountain Hawks ship up to Boston for matchup with Terriers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Just three games remain for the Lehigh women's basketball team before the Patriot League tournament and every single one of them counts for the Mountain Hawks, as they continue to push for a bye into the Quarterfinal round for the third consecutive season.
On Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in Boston, Lehigh will take on Boston University for the second time this season after getting the best of the Terriers back on Jan. 8 at Stabler Arena, allowing just 34 points.
BU seems like a much different team since that early-season battle, with that seven-game win streak mixed in, but the Mountain Hawks had been in the midst of a three-game win streak the last time they saw BU.
Since starting the Patriot League slate 5-0, Lehigh has lost seven of its last 10 games, including the last two to Bucknell and Colgate, who are currently the league's Nos. 1 and 2 teams heading into the tournament.
Against the Bison, senior point guard Hannah Hedstrom had another strong scoring performance with a team-high 13 points with a season-high nine rebounds and five assists after scoring a career-high 15 points vs. Colgate last Wednesday. Emma Grothaus added nine points with six rebounds, while Mary Clougherty scored eight off the bench and Camryn Buhr had seven points.
The Mountain Hawks shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the floor and 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from the free throw line.
The last win Lehigh has was an 89-72 victory over Army West Point on Feb. 15, when Buhr scored a career-high 36 points and Grothaus added a career-high 25 points. The Mountain Hawks, just a game up on seventh-place American, would need two wins in the last three games to guarantee a bye into the quarterfinal round. Two of the last three games represent tough road contests with BU and then Colgate next Wednesday.
Boston University is attempting to continue its climb up the Patriot League ladder with just three games remaining in the regular season schedule.
The Terriers fell in their last game at American, 55-54, but had won seven games in a row up until that point and are now 10-5 in league play after starting 3-4.
BU overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter with five minutes left against the Eagles at Bender, but couldn't move past them, falling by a single point. American had started the fourth on a 13-0 run, but BU fought back to tie the game off a Maggie Pina 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left, eventually falling when Jade Edwards hit a free throw with 0.3 seconds left to come away with the victory.
Pina and Maren Durant each scored 11 points to lead the way, while Sydney Johnson added 10 points with seven assists and four rebounds. Durant had nine boards with four blocks. Senior Nia Irving came off the bench to score six points with six rebounds and two assists.
The Terriers shot 48.9 percent (22-for-45) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from the 3-point line, converting on 50 percent (5-for-10) of their free throws.
Boston University is led offensively by Katie Nelson, who is averaging 12.5 points per game and shooting 34.4 percent from beyond-the-arc. Freshman and Rookie of the Year favorite Maggie Pina is second with 11.3 points while shooting nearly 40 percent from the field.
This will be the 17th meeting all-time between the Mountain Hawks and Terriers. After dropping two straight last season, Lehigh got back in the win column against BU by taking the first matchup of the year back on Jan. 8, by a score of 51-34 at Stabler Arena.
Megan Walker led the way for Lehigh with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from beyond-the-arc. Hannah Hedstrom added 11 points on three 3-pointers, while Mariah Sexe finished with eight points.
Despite being tied in the all-time series 8-8, Lehigh has a 8-5 lead in Patriot League games against the Terriers dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Wednesday's game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network and a live audio stream will be provided on Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the play-by-play call, with a pre-game show set for 5:50 p.m.
