BETHLEHEM, Pa. — With just four games remaining on the regular season schedule, each and every game is important for the Lehigh women's basketball team on the road to the Patriot League Tournament.
On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks take on Bucknell for the second time this season, trying to avoid getting swept by the Bison for the second consecutive season. Saturday's game tips off at 2 p.m. from Sojka Pavilion.
After a strong win over Army West Point last weekend at home, Lehigh struggled to get much of anything going against Colgate on Wednesday evening at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks stayed near the Raiders during the first half of the game, trailing by only a point at the break, but the team's third quarter struggles continued, outscored 25-15 and eventually fell by nine points.
Sophomore forward Emma Grothaus followed up her career performance against Army with her second straight 20-point game, finishing with 21 points against the Raiders on 7-for-11 shooting, making seven of her eight free throw attempts. She added seven rebounds with two assists and a block. Grothaus' average has officially skyrocketed to 10.1 points per game.
Senior guard Hannah Hedstrom scored a career-high 15 points against Colgate, adding four assists and two rebounds. Hedstrom was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 selection on Thursday for the second consecutive season.
Two other Mountain Hawks scored in double figures with Cameryn Benz (11) and Mary Clougherty (11), while Camryn Buhr just missed out on her fourth straight double-double with nine points and nine rebounds to along with three assists.
Lehigh shot efficiently from the field at 41.9 percent (26-for-62), but had an evening to forget from long range, shooting just 13.3 percent (2-for-15). The Mountain Hawks are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Patriot League, two games up on seventh-place American.
There is no doubting which team is the top dog in the Patriot League this season. It's Bucknell and it hasn't really been that close this season, out to a two-game advantage for first place over Boston University and Colgate with four games remaining.
The Bison have had success all season long, especially at home with a 10-1 record at Sojka Pavilion.
Bucknell has won four straight games dating back to Feb. 8 vs. Loyola and three of those games weren't very close.
During their four-game win streak, the Bison have a 24-point victory over Loyola, a 10-point win over Navy and an 18-point win against Holy Cross at Sojka.
Against the Crusaders, Bucknell had three players score in double-figures with Abby Kapp leading the way with 16 points. Ally Johnson and Ellie Mack both finished with 11, as Mack registered a double-double with her 10 rebounds. The Bison shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the field and 38.9 percent (7-for-18) from beyond-the-arc in the victory. They were near-perfect from the foul line at 83.3 percent (10-for-12).
Two Bucknell players are averaging double scoring figures this season in Ellie Mack (14.9) and Abby Kapp (10.4). Mack is currently third of all Patriot League players in scoring behind Holy Cross' Lauren Manis and Colgate's Rachel Thompson.
Bucknell is closing in on a regular season crown for the fourth time in the last five years and will get closer with a win over Lehigh on Saturday. The Bison are trying to win their second straight Patriot League Tournament title.
Saturday will be the 86th all-time matchup between Lehigh and Bucknell, which dates back to Feb. 22, 1977.
The Mountain Hawks and Bison are all tied up in the all-time series, 43-43. Bucknell has been victorious in nine of the last 10 matchups since the 2014-15 season. The Mountain Hawks have not won at Sojka since Feb. 20, 2013.
Bucknell leads Lehigh in Patriot League play all-time, 34-25, including a 22-17 edge in Lewisburg.
Saturday's game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network and radio coverage with Matt Markus will be aired live on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM and 94.7 FM in Allentown.
