BALTIMORE – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored six of the final seven first-half goals to take a 10-4 halftime advantage, on the way to a convincing 17-11 win at UMBC on Tuesday evening. Now 2-0 on the young season, the Mountain Hawks one-upped their 16-goal performance in Friday's season opener, led by a career-high seven goals from senior Sondra Dickey and five-goal, two-assist performance from freshman Katia Carnevale.
Â
After combining for 12 points in Friday's opener, Lehigh's starting freshmen attack combined for 18 on Tuesday. Along with Carnevale's seven points, reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Gabby Schneider had six (one goal, five assists) and Emma Eberhardt tallied five (two goals, three assists). Dickey added an assist for a career-high tying eight points. Junior Cecily Redfern and sophomore Jackie Stoller scored goals as well.
Â
Defensively, the Mountain Hawks caused 11 of UMBC's 15 turnovers, led by three caused turnovers from sophomore Jenna Garden. Carnevale also tallied three while Dickey tallied two. Lehigh held a 19-11 edge in draw controls, led by a career-high eight from junior Hannah Cermack. Redfern recorded five while Dickey tallied four.
Â
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a goal from Dickey and consecutive tallies from Carnevale. UMBC responded with three of the next four to pull within 4-3, but that's as close as the Retrievers would come.
Â
The Mountain Hawks answered by scoring six of the next seven goals to take control heading into halftime. Dickey scored twice in the run, while Carnevale finished an impressive behind-the-back goal to give Lehigh a 7-4 advantage. Â
The Mountain Hawks' final three goals came in the span of 1:29 and included a Schneider goal followed by a Schneider assist to Redfern, for a 10-4 halftime lead.
Â
UMBC began the second half with the first two and three of the first four goals to pull within 11-7 with 21:15 on the clock. Lehigh quickly erased doubt with a 3-0 surge – scored by Carnevale, Dickey and Eberhardt – all in the span of 1:53. Eberhardt's goal was a highlight-reel score to give the Mountain Hawks a 14-7 lead with 17:09 remaining.
Lehigh cruised from there, and the victory was capped off by Stoller's first-career goal in the final minute.
Final shots were 37-23 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Lehigh held a 22-16 edge in groundballs. Junior Samantha Sagi finished with six saves across UMBC goalkeeper Lexi Roberts, who made 16.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions. Gametime is set for 3 p.m.
