BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will look to finish its season on a high note as the Mountain Hawks head to Hamilton, N.Y. for the two-day, 54-hole Patriot League Championship Saturday and Sunday at Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Course.
Lehigh is one of eight teams that will be vying for the Patriot League's automatic bid to the regional round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The individual champion will also earn a bid to NCAAs if he is not a member of the championship team.
The Patriot League championship features a play six, score four format. The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman receives the sport's Rookie of the Year honor. Head coaches from all eight schools will vote on the Patriot League Coach of the Year award.
There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.
Lehigh's six-player entrant includes seniors Lee Hammerschmidt, Eamon Marone and Max Redetzke; juniors Ryan Kelly and Owen Quinn and freshman Michael Tanaka.
The Mountain Hawks head into the Patriot League Tournament following a head-to-head 300-323 stroke play victory over Lafayette on Tuesday, where Tanaka and Quinn led the way with rounds of one over par 73.
The Patriot League Championship marks a return to Hamilton, N.Y. for the Mountain Hawks, who opened their fall season at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational back in September. Kelly led the Mountain Hawks, tying for seventh place as Lehigh finished sixth out of 15 teams.
The Seven Oaks Golf Course plays to 7,091 yards and a par 72.
Lehigh has played nine tournaments this season, four in the fall and five in the spring. Quinn has led the Mountain Hawks in six of the nine events. Redetzke led Lehigh at its most recent tournament, the Navy Spring Invitational, while Hammerschmidt paced the Mountain Hawks at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular over spring break.
The Mountain Hawks have won three Patriot League titles, the most recent coming in 2013. Lehigh also won team titles in 1996 and 1997. Two Mountain Hawks have claimed the individual title: current head coach Henry D'Alberto in 1996 and Bowen Osborn in 2001. Navy won last year's title at Saucon Valley Country Club, while Lehigh finished fourth.
Kelly has earned first team All-Patriot League honors in each of his first two seasons and was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2017.
The Patriot League Championship begins Saturday with 36 holes beginning at 8 a.m. Lehigh will play alongside Loyola for the first two rounds, with round one tee times beginning at 8 a.m. from the first hole and round two tee times starting at 12:30 p.m. from the 10th hole.
