Late push not enough as Lehigh conclude trip with 4-3 loss to Radford

CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the final match of its spring break trip to South Carolina, Lehigh fell to Radford 4-3 Wednesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks struggled in doubles and played from behind for most of the day, but did battle back to win the final three singles matches after Radford had clinched.
Lehigh heads back north with a 6-4 overall record. The Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play with two matches this weekend.
Radford (7-2) opened the match by sweeping the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders then captured straight set victories at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 3 flights to clinch the match, but Lehigh refused to quit as the Mountain Hawks battled to win the final three matches, two of which went three sets and the other decided in a 10-point tiebreak.
Senior Bryant Born got Lehigh on the board at No. 5 bouncing back after losing the second set to beat Matko Varga 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Classmate Chris Auteri rallied from a set down to top Andres Silva in a tiebreak at No. 6.
Freshman Zack Elliott closed out the match by rallying from a set down to top Rodrigo Magalhaes in three sets at No. 2. Elliott dropped a tight first set 7-5 but went on to claim the next two by 6-1 and 6-2 scores.
"We didn't execute in doubles and were playing from behind all match long," Lehigh head coach Wouter Hendrix said. "We made a valiant push at the end, which showed our fighting spirit and brought it back from 4-0 to 4-3. Our team has a lot of pride. We had an amazing break. I want to give a shout out to all the folks that made this trip possible.
Lehigh will open Patriot League play with two matches in Maryland this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will face Loyola Saturday at noon in Baltimore and will then face Navy Sunday at 1 p.m. in Annapolis.
