Mountain Hawks wrap up California trip with 14-5 win over UC Davis

3/12/2019 6:20:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

SAN DIEGO – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored the game's first three goals and five of the first six, and wouldn't look back, on the way to downing UC Davis 14-5 in a neutral-site contest on Tuesday. Junior Sondra Dickey led the offense with four goals while sophomore Hannah Cermack dished a career-high four assists and senior Mary Ellen Carron tallied two goals and an assist. Sophomore Samantha Sagi was strong in goal, stopping 10-of-15 shots sent her way.

"We transitioned the ball much better today and had some terrific goal scoring as well," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern

Senior Kellie Gough and sophomore Julianne Puckett each scored twice while senior Courtney Henig, junior Christine Balestra and freshmen Nora Giordano and Maggie Kelly each scored a goal. It marked the first-career goal for Kelly.

Dickey, Henig and Cermack each had two caused turnovers as Lehigh allowed five or fewer goals for the second time in the last five contests.

Winners of four of their last five, the Mountain Hawks opened the game with three straight goals and five of the first six to take early control. Dickey opened at the 27:39 mark with her first of the game. After the Aggies pulled within 4-1, goals from Dickey and Giordano gave Lehigh a 5-1 lead at 15:05 of the first half.

UC Davis pulled within 5-2, but a Puckette goal at the 4:34 mark gave Lehigh a 6-2 halftime edge.

The Mountain Hawks continued the momentum into the second half, scoring the first three goals. The first two came from Dickey, her third and fourth of the game, before Gough's second of the contest gave Lehigh a 9-2 edge at the 18:06 mark.

UC Davis responded with three of the next five goals, but the Mountain Hawks ended the game on a 3-0 run – with goals from Carron, Puckette and Balestra to wrap up the 14-5 win.

Lehigh finished with a 29-21 edge in shots and 14-9 advantage in groundballs. UC Davis held a 12-9 edge in draw controls.

Now 4-3 on the season, Lehigh will return home on Saturday to host Boston University in the Patriot League opener at 1 p.m.

"BU will be a tough test for us, but we are excited to get league play started," said Redfern.
