CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior George Cooper picked up his first singles win of the season, but the Lehigh men's tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end with a 5-1 loss to College of Charleston Monday at Patriots Point.
The Mountain Hawks were unable to get going in doubles and dropped all three matches, with Cooper's straight set victory at No. 4 singles accounting for Lehigh's only point. Lehigh falls to 6-3, while Charleston moves to 11-2.
"We came out reluctant in doubles and had some good battles in singles," Lehigh head coach Wouter Hendrix said. "This was a good learning experience for our team."
After sweeping the doubles matches College of Charleston picked up straight set wins at the bottom two singles flights, while a 6-4, 6-0 win for Benedikt Henning over sophomore Harry Wang at No. 1 clinched the match for the Cougars.
Cooper bested Johnny Wang 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 for Lehigh's lone point. Senior Bryant Born won the first set from Ben Cawston at No. 3, but dropped the second set and then fell 10-8 in a tiebreaker. Freshman Zack Elliott's match was halted with Elliott down a set and even at 6-6 in the second.
Lehigh will wrap-up the South Carolina portion of its spring break trip when it battles Radford in Charleston Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
