PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Lehigh men's tennis team wrapped up its fall slate this weekend with the conclusion of the ITA Regionals. In all, six players competed this weekend on the campus of the University of Penn.
Â
"Our players gained valuable match experience against some of the best competition in the Northeast," stated head coach Wouter Hendrix. "Thanks to a strong effort, we earned a few opportunities in our matches against Ivy League opponents but couldn't convert. It was a good learning experience"
Â
Despite only Harry Wang being already placed in the main draw, the Mountain Hawks got a win from another player in the main draw singles. Having to win two qualifying matches to be placed in the main draw, Zack Elliott won both of his matches to be given the chance. In his first qualifying match, Elliott beat Binghamton's Dan Pergel in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, while then defeating FDU's Mehdi Dhouib in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Once in the main draw, Elliott opened with a win against William Wharton, 6-2, 6-1, but then dropped his second round match in straight sets. The senior Wang was edged in his opening round match, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Â
In the qualifying round for the main draw singles, Jeremy Learner and Gary Fishkin both dropped their opening match. Learner dropped a close match, while Fishkin was edged in a thrilling three-setter. Matt Kleiman won his opening match against Fordham's De Macar, 7-5, 4-6 (10/1). In his next match for a berth in the main draw, the freshman was edged by Binghamton's Matt Pawlowic, 6-4, 6-2.
Â
Qualifying for main doubles, the Brown and White pair of Learner and Michael Bukhalo dropped a match to Diego Huttepain and Nikita Larichev, 8-1.
Â
Already slated in main doubles, Wang and Elliott won their first match against Rider's Pablo Solar and Adrian Tsui, 8-3, but then lost in the second match to Princeton's Justin Barki and Bill Duo, 8-6.
Â
"Overall I'm pleased with the way we performed in the fall slate, while also realizing we have a long way to go to put ourselves in a position to contend for a championship." concluded Hendrix.
Â
One thing Lehigh showed in the fall was they have depth and talent all around. Five guys had seven wins or more in singles play in the fall, while three pairs of doubles recorded four or more wins.
Â
Up next, Lehigh will focus on how to improve as they itch closer to its main schedule. Lehigh will next return to the courts in February.
