Gonzalez And Can Win Flight A Doubles, Nowak Wins Flight D Singles As Lehigh Concludes Moore Invite

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lehigh's women's tennis team concluded action in the 2018 Moore Invitational Sunday, September 16 which featured Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez winning the Flight A doubles tournament.
Starting off in the Flight A doubles, Gonzalez and Can had a pair of close contests, winning against the pair of Fajnarova/Erspamer of Seton Hall 7-5 in the first round before taking down Budiman/Saravann of NJIT 7-5 as well in the quarterfinals. Moving to the semifinals, Lehigh saw their doubles pair earn a clean sweep of Eftenoiu/Vorozheikiha of Fairleigh Dickinson 6-0 before dispatching Cyr/Rico of Navy 6-3 in the Finals.
"I was happy with how the team competed this weekend in the first competition of the year. Paula and Sibel played very solid doubles all weekend and their ability to play fearlessly was key to their success today in the finals," said head coach Sarah Hendrix.
In Flight B doubles, Catherine Meighan and Grace Lin battled the pair of Kommaraju/Bogdanovich from Navy, losing 6-2.
Flight A singles saw both Gonzalez and Can advance to the quarterfinals. Advancing to the second round after a walkout, Gonzalez would face Ansofi Wreder of Navy, losing in two sets 7-5 and 6-3. Can took care of Kahlei Reisinger of St. Bonaventure in the first round 6-0,6-2 before going on to take on Mel Taal of Sacred Heart. After wiinning the first set 7-6, Can dropped the second set 2-6 to set up a winner take all third set which would see her fall 12-10 to Taal.
Competing in Flight B singles, Lin faced Mayar Eltony of NJIT, falling in the second round 6-3 and 6-2. Also in Flight B was Casey Zhong, who was defeated 6-4,6-1 by Joleta Budiman of NJIT.
Flight C singles featured Leigh Friedman for Lehigh, she would bow out in the second round to Maria Pandya of Binghamton in two sets 7-5,6-4.
In Flight D was Catherine Meighan, who won in two sets against Caroline Mattise of Monmouth 6-1,6-1. Moving to the second round, Meighan would fall to Danika Kahatapitiya of Navy in two sets, losing 6-0 in the first before losing a hard-fought second set 7-5. Another victor for Lehigh, Elizabeth Nowak won the Flight D singles. Starting off with a clean sweep in two sets, 6-0,6-0, against Isabelle Ismanescu of Fairleigh Dickinson, she then moved on to beat Nicole Gasser of Monmouth in three sets 6-4,2-6 and 11-9. In the semifianls, Nowak found herself up against Eftenoiu of Fairleigh Dickinson, which was settled in two sets 6-3,6-3. The finals saw another two-set victory, this time over Danika Kahatapitiya of Navy 6-1,7-5.
"I was very proud of freshman Lizzie Nowak's performance in the D singles flight. She was extremely composed and competitive all weekend and that really paid off today in the finals as well," said Hendrix.
The Mountain Hawks next see action in the West Point Invitational in West Point, N.Y. from Saturday, September 29 to Sunday, September 30.
