LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks rebounded from a 3-0 game one loss with a complete team effort in a 6-3 victory in game two. Lehigh's game two win ended Bucknell's run of three-straight sweeps in Saturday doubleheaders.
After being no-hit in game one, Lehigh (15-22, 5-11) responded in game two with its second-highest hit (12) and run (6) totals in league play this season. The Mountain Hawks jumped on Bucknell (13-23,10-9) early in game two and broke open a comfortable lead with a four-run eighth inning outburst. Quinn McKenna paced the offense with a season-high four RBIs in game two as he finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Connor Van Hoose stole the show in game one as he tossed a complete-game no hitter for the fifth no-hitter in Bucknell history. The senior needed only 76 pitches to complete the no-no as he struck out eight, walked two and saw one other batter reach on a throwing error in 7.0 innings of work. Van Hoose extends his shutout streak to 19.2-straight innings and lowers his ERA to 0.45 in Patriot League play.
Tony Gallo drew the second walk of the game in a four-pitch at bat with one out in the seventh. After a pop fly to shallow left for the second out, the no-hitter was completed as catcher Evan Klugerman picked off Gallo with a snap throw down to first base for the final out of the game.
Van Hoose improves to 6-5 overall with a record of 5-1 in league play. Levi Stoudt suffered the loss and falls to 2-7 overall with a mark of 0-4 against league opponents as he surrendered just three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Lehigh had a complete turnaround in game two, excelling in all three phases of the game. Jason Reynolds set the tone with a strong start on the mound and was backed by a defense that turned a season-high three double plays and compiled an error-free performance. The offense had a huge rebound from game one as eight of the nine starters recorded a hit as they compiled the most hits against Bucknell in its last 11 Patriot League games.
McKenna hurt Bucknell early and late with his bat as the freshman opened the scoring with a RBI single in the second inning. He then came through again with a huge three-run triple in the eighth inning which extended the Lehigh lead to five runs.
After taking a five-run lead in the top of the eighth, Lehigh saw the buffer shrink to three runs as Bucknell scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Chris Butera, who relieved Reynolds in the sixth inning, retired six of his first eight batters before allowing a walk in the eighth inning to put runners on first and second with two outs. Ethan Frohman relieved Butera and surrendered a two-run triple before ending the inning with a strikeout. Frohman went on to retire all three batters in order with consecutive strikeouts in the ninth to seal the victory.
Reynolds earned the game two win and improves to 3-4 overall with a record of 1-2 in league play. The sophomore held the Bison to just one run on four hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Bucknell's Jeff Gottesman took the loss in game two as he falls to 4-3 overall with a record of 4-2 in league play. The six hits and two runs are the most he has surrendered in his last four starts against Patriot League opponents. His four strikeouts are the fewest he has recorded in last seven starts.
Lehigh and Bucknell return to Depew Field on Sunday to determine a winner of the weekend set. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live for free on the Patriot League Network.
