ARLINGTON, Va. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up its weekend series against the George Washington Revolutionaries on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Mountain Hawks dropped game one 7-3 but defeated the Revs 6-3 in game two to earn the weekend series victory.
"The team showed a lot of determination this weekend," said Peter E. Bennett '63 head coach Sean Leary. "Winning any series on the road is challenging and the guys found a way to accomplish this. Our starting pitching was very strong, and we got some clutch offensive and defensive performances. We are excited to build on the positives and get back to work on some other areas where we can improve."
Jonas Aponick earned the win for GW (1-5) in game one, striking out three with one earned run in 2.0 innings of relief. Lehigh (2-4) relief pitcher Ryan Holman was credited with the loss.
Junior Rafaelle Rogers opened game one with a bang, delivering a solo shot to right field in the top of the first to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks held their one-run lead for four innings, as Lehigh starter Cole Leaman and GW starter Andrew Cutler combined to only allow three base runners through the first four frames.
The Mountain Hawks extended their lead to two thanks to senior Trystan Crawford's RBI single in the top of the fifth. The Revolutionaries responded in the bottom of the fifth with a Jack Kent two RBI double that tied the game at 2-2. Senior Aidan Quinn connected on his second home run of the season in the top of the sixth to give Lehigh a 3-2 advantage.
After keeping GW off the board in the sixth, the Revs managed to come back in the seventh. GW put up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead by four runs. The Mountain Hawks only managed one baserunner in the final two innings, resulting in a 7-3 win for GW.
Crawford, Quinn, Rogers, senior Ryan Cochran, senior Owen Walewander, and sophomore Edwin Betances all got hits in game one. Leaman finished the day with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched with two earned runs. Sophomore Max Treonze and senior David Andolina appeared on the mound in addition to Leaman and Holman.
Junior Sam Fairhurst earned his first career win in game two for Lehigh, striking out five with two earned runs in 4.0 innings of relief. GW starter Declan Wywoda was credited with the loss after allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings.
The Mountain Hawks once again struck first in game one, this time by way of a Quinn RBI single in the top of the first. Quinn delivered again in the top of the third with an RBI sac-fly that sent senior Dom Patrizi past home plate. Patrizi gave the Mountain Hawks more insurance in the top of the fifth with an RBI double that gave Lehigh a 3-0 lead.
Trailing by three in the bottom of the fifth, GW's Charlie Rogan hit a solo homer to give the Revs their first run of game two. Lehigh loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but GW reliever Drew Oppenheim managed to escape the jam. The Revs cut their deficit to one in the bottom of the frame on a Christian Dewey RBI single.
Lehigh did some more damage in the seventh inning, sending two more runs across the plate on RBIs from Rogers and Crawford. A Robbie Carvelli RBI single in the top of the ninth pushed Lehigh's lead to three headed into the final frame. The Revs would get back a run in the bottom of the ninth, but senior Brandon Coughlin closed out the game on the mound to secure the series victory.
Patrizi went a perfect 3-3 in game two with three runs scored, two walks, and an RBI. Crawford, Rogers, sophomore Ian Wirtz and first-year Robby Grasso each tallied two hits in the win. Carvelli, Quinn, and senior Ryan Davis also got hits in game two.
Senior Shane O'Neill started game two for the Mountain Hawks, striking out two batters in 2.0 scoreless innings. Sophomore Noah Gyauch-Quirk also appeared on the mound in game two, recording two strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings.
The Mountain Hawks return to the DMV area next weekend for a three-game series against George Mason from Friday, February 27 to Sunday, March 1.
