ARLINGTON, Va. – A four-run seventh inning allowed Lehigh baseball to defeat the George Washington University Revolutionaries by a score of 5-3 on Friday afternoon. The win is the first Mountain Hawk victory of the 2026 season.
Sophomore Jake Mulvehill earned the win for Lehigh (1-3) after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief while sophomore Cole Kochanowicz earned the first Lehigh save of the season. Starter Max Haug was credited with the loss for George Washington (0-4).
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Haug and Lehigh starter Christopher Nell, as neither pitcher allowed a baserunner through two innings. The first-year faced a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the third but managed to escape the jam.
The Revolutionaries finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth on a Christian Dewey RBI single to score the game's first run. Meanwhile, Haug only allowed one baserunner through the first six innings.
After Mulvehill kept GW off the board in the bottom of the sixth, Lehigh's offense produced in the top of the seventh. Senior Ryan Cochran singled home junior Robbie Carvelli to the tie the game before RBIs from seniors Owen Walewander and Trystan Crawford gave Lehigh a 3-1 lead. Senior Jack Frankovic sent junior Raffaele Rogers home on a fielder's choice to put the Mountain Hawks up by three.
Kochanowicz entered the game for Lehigh in the bottom of the seventh, allowing only one baserunner in the seventh and eighth to keep the Mountain Hawks on top. Walewander delivered his first home run of the season in the top of the ninth to give Lehigh a four-run advantage. GW managed to make a late run and add two runs in the bottom of the ninth, by Kochanowicz closed out the inning to secure the Lehigh victory.
Walewander had a big day for the Mountain Hawks, batting 3-4 with two RBIs and a home run. Carvelli, Cochran, and senior Aidan Quinn provided the other hits for Lehigh.
Nell finished the day with two strikeouts and one earned run in 4.1 innings of work. Kochanowicz struck out three batters while allowing two runs in 3.0 complete innings of work.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the series against the Revolutionaries on Saturday, February 21 for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
