TJ Coats received the win for Miami (2-0) after striking out five batters with one earned run in 3.1 innings of relief. Starter Cole Leaman was credited with the loss for Lehigh (0-2).
Senior Dom Patrizi opened the game with a lead-off single in the top of the first inning and then reached third base on a fielding error. Junior Robbie Carvelli then reached on a walk, but not before Patrizi scampered home on a passed ball to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Senior Aidan Quinn homered to deep left field on the very next at bat, and quickly the Mountain Hawks had a 3-0 first inning lead.
The Hurricanes had a strong response in the bottom of the first, putting up six runs to double Lehigh's score. Miami tacked on two more in the bottom of the second by way of solo homers from Alex Sosa and Derek Williams to lead 8-3 through two innings.
Lehigh got back two runs of their own in the top of the fourth, kickstarted by a lead-off solo homer from junior Raffaele Rogers. Patrizi singled home senior Trystan Crawford to bring Lehigh within three before the Canes scored a sac-fly to lead 9-5 through four innings.
Miami extended their lead by three runs in the fifth inning thanks to two more homers from Sosa and Williams. A Crawford solo homer in the sixth inning set the score at 12-6 before the Canes put up three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the eighth on RBIs from Rogers and sophomore Ian Wirtz, but the Canes responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Junior Joey Esposito delivered a three-run homer to left field in the top of the ninth to set the final score at 17-11.
Patrizi, Rogers, and Crawford all had two-hit days for the Mountain Hawks. Esposito led the team with three RBIs while Quinn (2), Rogers (2), Patrizi (1), Crawford (1) and Wirtz (1) also batted in runs for Lehigh. First-year Parker Ivy, senior Ryan Cochran, and first-year Silvio Giardina also recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks.
Junior Sam Fairhurst, sophomore Noah Gyauch-Quirk, senior Tommy Lamar, and senior Ralph Gariano saw action on the mound in addition to Leaman.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude the series with the Hurricanes on Sunday, February 15 at 12 p.m.
