DAVIDSON, N.C. – A complete team effort carried Lehigh to a big win in the opening game of a three-game weekend series at defending A-10 champion Davidson Friday night at Wilson Field.
Lehigh (3-5) snapped Davidson's (7-2) five-game win streak as seven different Mountain Hawks recorded hits on the night and held the Wildcats to their lowest hit total (6) in their last five games. Sophomore righty Levi Stoudt (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, while junior Ethan Frohman picked up his first save of the season and Peter Woltersdorf also strong performance of the pen.
Jeff Shanfeldt recorded the first hit the game when he tripled to center field to lead off the second. After back-to-back Lehigh strikeouts, Mike Maguire poked a single to left center to bring home Shanfeldt for the game's first run. Shanfeldt's triple is just the second for the Mountain Hawks this season.
With the game tied 1-1, both teams recorded key stops in the fourth. Lehigh threatened on the base paths as Ryan Bonshak drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Davidson's Allen Barry managed to work out of the jam with a big strikeout on a 2-2 count. Bonshak came up big defensively in the bottom of the fourth as he recorded the final out of the inning and held the Wildcats off the board when he threw out his right field counterpart, Alex Mardiney, who attempted to score from second.
The Mountain Hawks broke open some breathing room by getting three runs across in the fifth and sixth innings. Lehigh took advantage of Davidson miscues in the fifth as Chris Kersey drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a balk. Kersey later scored on a Davidson throwing error with two outs recorded. In the sixth, Kersey traded places with Matt Hand as the two infielders hit back-to-back RBI doubles for the only two hits in the inning. Stoudt held up his end on the mound as he held the Wildcats hitless in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Lehigh bats went cold down the stretch, with just one hit in the final three frames, but the pitching staff picked up the slack. Woltersdorf relieved Stoudt in the middle of the seventh with one out and two runners on. The rookie righty recorded the second out with a fielder's choice and then loaded the bases with a walk before recording a big inning-ending strikeout to work out of the jam unscathed.
Woltersdorf held Davidson hitless in the eighth and retired the first two batters in the ninth before surrendering a walk and a single. Coach Sean Leary decided to go to the pen and brought in Frohman who tossed one pitched for a ground out and collected the save.
Sophomores Maguire and Blake Rapoport led Lehigh with two hits each on the night, while Maguire Kersey and Hand each recorded an RBI.
The Mountain Hawks and Wildcats will resume play Saturday at 2 p.m. as Lehigh looks to clinch a series win.
