Mountain Hawks wrap up season-opening Lehigh Invitational

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team opened its 2017-18 season on Saturday by competing in the Lehigh Invitational. The regatta featured two races, women's eights and men's eights. Saint Joseph's, Villanova and Jefferson came in to take part in the 3,500-meter regatta on Lake Nockamixon. Lehigh's "A" boats (women's and men's) led the way for the Mountain Hawks, each finishing in fourth place.

"I think the effort from the team was what we wanted to see," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We need to work on where we rank against our competition, but it's good that we got that out of our way early in the season."

The women's boats began with 11 crews over the four schools competing. Saint Joseph's "A" boat came in first with a time of 12:21.20. Lehigh's "A" crew finished in 12:47.82 while its "B" crew came in 12:59.31 and "C" boat came in 15:10.80.

On the men's side, Temple's "A" boat finished first in 10:51.57. Lehigh's "A" crew came in 11:08.34, "B" crew finished in 13:04.71 and "C" crew came in 13:34.06.

"The interesting thing is that we actually had our captains select our lineups for today," said Conley. "It was fascinating to watch that process and how they went about selecting their boats. I think it really gave some insight to them and insight to us regarding where each of our heads are. There weren't any really big surprises."

The Mountain Hawks look to take what they learned into their next competition as they head to Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 14.

"We're going to start working towards getting our lineups squared away for Head of the Charles, so we can race them at Navy Day," said Conley. "Our goal is to take today's lessons and apply them to those lineups, while at the same time, working with the rest of the team to keep pushing them from the bottom to make everybody else faster in the long run."
