Mountain Hawks finish impressive effort at Navy Day

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed a successful effort at Navy Day on Saturday, held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. A strong top-to-bottom day was led by the Men's Varsity Four, which saw Lehigh's two crews finish eighth and ninth respectively (out of 23 boats), while the Women's Varsity Eight enjoyed an especially strong showing as well.

"I thought we brought a great deal of intensity this week in comparison to what we did at the Lehigh Invitational, which was great to see from all the boats, top-to-bottom," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I think the results showed we made some big strides this weekend in regards to what we're trying to accomplish."

The day began with the Men's Varsity Four, which saw Lehigh's "B" boat finish in eighth with a time of 14:28.34, while Lehigh's "A" boat was less than a second behind (14:29.31). Lehigh's first women's race saw the Women's Varsity Four placing 11th out of 30 with a time of 16:34.16.

Other notable finishes were the Women's Freshmen Eight coming in sixth out of 13 (16:13.99) while the Women's JV Eight saw boats finish in eighth (15:00.11), 13th (15:33.69) and 21st (17:10.51), respectively, out of 30 crews. The Women's Varsity Eight had its "A" boat finish in 15:12.35, "B" boat finish in 15:15.13 and "C" boat finish in 15:53.90.

"In the Men's Varsity Four, there was great competition just within the team," said Conley. "We had strong competitors in the Women's Varsity Eight despite the fact that we were racing lineups simply based on erg score."

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend when they compete in the Head of the Charles in Boston, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 21.

It was exciting to see everybody perform at a high level today despite racing multiple times and with different lineups," said Conley. "Overall, it was a great day."
