Â
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following its fall season opener late last month, the Lehigh rowing team returns to action when it competes in Navy Day this Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Mountain Hawks' first race will begin at approximately 9 a.m., with races set to go off all afternoon.
Â
Saturday will serve as an opportunity to improve and learn about the team, heading into the Head of the Charles next weekend in Boston.
Â
"This regatta is important to show us where we are and how our summer training went," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It will also allow us to get a lot of race experience, with some athletes racing as much as three times."
Â
Saturday's Navy Day lineups could be a preview for the Head of the Charles.
Â
"We finished up selection for the Head of the Charles and will race what could be our lineups," said Conley. "The team is excited about getting out, racing the lineups and seeing what we need to work on."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will look to build off their first regatta, the Lehigh Invitational which saw them compete against Saint Joseph's, Villanova and Jefferson at Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown. Lehigh's "A" crew finished in fourth place in both the Women's and Men's Varsity Eight. Since that event, the Mountain Hawks have been hard at work looking to develop strong habits that will carry over to race day.
Â
"We have seen a bigger increase in our intensity and we're able to do that while also taking our first set of exams," said Conley. "The freshmen are the ones I'm really excited about as many of them have never rowed before coming to Lehigh. They've come such a long way in a short time and have overcome the normal overwhelming feeling of freshman life. The team will feed off their energy and racing."
Â
Saturday's Navy Day is a head race, which is done in a time trail format. At last season's Navy Day, Lehigh's best performance came from the Women's Freshmen Four, who finished second out of 13 crews with a time of 17:57.83. The Women's Freshmen Eight also placed fifth out of 16 crews, finishing in 17:00.61.
Â
"Every boat will be racing against themselves," said Conley. "This is critical to learn for the spring racing."
Â
Following Saturday's competition, the Mountain Hawks will head to the Head of the Charles, beginning next Saturday, Oct. 21 in Boston.
