BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman Jorge Portorreal has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced Monday. Portorreal enjoyed a breakout game in Lehigh's loss to Yale on Saturday, hauling in five receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown.
All five of Portorreal's catches against the Bulldogs went for touchdowns, including three which helped convert 3rd-and-long situations. Portorreal capped his day with a 53 yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter for his first career touchdown. He also returned a kickoff for 12 yards.
Lehigh narrowly missed having a trio of 100 yard receivers on Saturday with Portorreal finishing one yard short. Senior Gatlin Casey caught four passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Troy Pelletier added 95 yards on eight catches.
Through three games, the Union, N.J. native has eight receptions for 133 yards and has returned a pair of kickoffs for 37 yards.
As a team, Lehigh ranks second nationally in passing offense, averaging 354.3 yards per game.
Portorreal's award is the second this season for a Lehigh football player. Quarterback Brad Mayes was named Offensive Player of the Week following Lehigh's season-opener versus Villanova. Portorreal is the first Rookie of the Week for the Mountain Hawks since Riley O'Neil was honored following last year's win over Colgate.
The Mountain Hawks will host Penn Saturday at Goodman Stadium with game time set for 12:30 p.m. Tickets are available and can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
